About the Author
Richard J. Hanson has more than five decades of practical experience in the development of mathematical software. He has worked in academia, for the United States government, and for private software firms. He now has his own consulting business and is currently working on a new parallel version of the ARPACK eigenvalue package.

Tim Hopkins is the current algorithms editor for ACM Transactions on Mathematical Software and has four decades of experience writing and testing scientific application codes in Fortran. He worked as a lecturer in the School of Computer Science at the University of Kent for 35 years before retiring in 2010. He has been a member of IFIP Working Group 2.5 on Numerical Software since 2003 and is currently writing parallel simulation codes for Bergen Software Services International, using Fortran and MPI.

A must-read for those who want to understand modern Fortran

I've been seeing a lot of books come out with "Modern Fortran" in the title, which has given me a chuckle. As a former Fortran compiler developer, and current Fortran standards committee member and "evangelist" on behalf of my employer, I see a lot of programmers who learned Fortran back in the 80s and 70s (and even 60s) who need help understanding all that Fortran 2008, the most recent standard, brings to the table. While there are lots of books that are references, or that try to teach the entire language from scratch, there aren't many that take the approach that Hanson and Hopkins did with "Numerical Computing With Modern Fortran."

I've known Dr. Hanson professionally for a number of years, and he sent me a copy of the book as a professional courtesy. He didn't ask me to review it, but after reading it I am delighted to do so as I will be recommending it to my own customers. If you're not a mathematician, don't let the title scare you. While Hanson and Hopkins do use popular mathematical algorithms to illustrate how to use modern Fortran, the bulk of the book is aimed at bringing the FORTRAN IV or FORTRAN 77 programmer up to speed with Fortran 2008. Topics covered include free-form source, modules, generic procedures, object-oriented programming and recursion, all things completely absent from older versions of the language. These are presented in an incremental fashion, with lots of small examples that illustrate the benefits and proper usage of the new features. The tone is friendly and approachable, and it is chock full of advice I completely agree with.

Especially delightful were the extensive chapters on the IEEE floating point and C interoperability features introduced in Fortran 2003, and several chapters on parallelism including MPI, OpenMP and coarrays (a Fortran 2008 feature.) Unlike some books I have read, Numerical Computing with Modern Fortran isn't structured as a textbook, though there are a couple of "exercises" at the end of each section that serve to make you think about the implications of what was written earlier. Full source for the examples is provided at the publisher's web site for download. Do note that this is NOT a reference book and it does not cover all aspects of the language. There are quite a few other excellent books out there for that purpose.

I highly recommend this book for any Fortran programmer whose Fortran skills were learned many years ago. Fortran is still widely used in engineering and scientific applications, especially in what is called High Performance Computing or HPC and this book can help you make the most of what the language has to offer.

I really liked this book. It has enough information to open your eyes, but not too much to scare you away. This is a book that has to be read slowly and with determination, with many pauses for looking-off-into-the-distance-deep-in-thoughts and practices. In the book Amit Ray continually brings the focus back to the simple and perfect practice of sitting, standing, walking postures and mindfulness. Ray talks as a good spiritual friend. In this book Amit Ray expresses the heart of Yoga and Vipassana in the simplest but most profound ways. Outstanding book!

I have read several books both about Yoga and Vipassana. Many of them very good books but none of them with this very interesting approach of uniting two in order to obtain much more than two! He has the openness to see not only the good things of Yoga and Vipassana but also their limitations and how to compensate them with each other.
The author's scientific background gives a great support to his presentation and also precision, a lot of clarity and organization of his ideas. That makes understanding easier.
I bought the kindle edition but I will order the paper book to use in a better way the very good and helpful charts and diagrams with yoga poses and daily schedules to follow.
I highly recommend this book and hope to continue reading his other books .

My mom who has been doing meditation for a long time liked the book so much, I bought her a copy. I loved this book, and highly recommend it.

Sweet story to pull on your heart strings

Christi Caldwell has written yet another charming story! It's easy to see why all of her books average 4-5 star ratings on Amazon when she consistently publishes high quality material that touches her readers' hearts. This book opens with William, heir to the Duke of Billingsley, on his way home after eight years of traveling through Europe and North America. While he's riding his horse, he's reminiscing about childhood memories that, while providing images of a happy family, also portray his reluctance to return and fullfill his obligation to marry his mother's god-daughter. As the winter storm worsens, he seeks shelter at a small inn.

When Lady Cara is introduced, she's watching from the window of her boarding school as carriages arrive to pick up her classmates for Christmas break. We're immediately pulled into her heart-wrenching feelings as her cold, heartless father has forgotten her and no one comes to get her for the holidays. She feels like the most unloved person alive. The headmistress demands Lady Nora give her a ride home, so Cara finds herself in the carriage of the Earl of Derby. And of course, the carriage gets stuck in the snow and she seeks shelter in the same inn as William.

I've read similar storylines before, but it's one that I like and Caldwell adds the extra element of Cara's character development from cold and selfish to embracing her desire to be happy, joyful and even kind. Her father has instructed her all her life to ignore anyone "beneath" her, especially servants, and it's obvious this is a role she plays and isn't part of her nature. Her memories of her father's strictures and cold neglect are heartbreaking. But William calls her out on her selfish behavior and she strives to prove him wrong. He brings out the best in her and she realizes she doesn't want to live the cold, formal existence her father has planned for her as the wife of a future duke. Does she dare to grasp the happiness William offers?

I thoroughly enjoyed this heartwarming story and read it in one sitting. There are a few minor details I had to just go with the story and suspend any disbelief, but it's worth it to allow the beauty of Cara's transformation to flow from the pages and cheer for her to embrace her softer, joyful side. William is the perfect hero: tall, strong, kind, funny and handsome. Of course she falls in love with him in a matter of days! The book is about 135 pages, so as a novella it may feel a bit rushed. But sometimes my short attention span craves more immediate gratification and I'm in the mood for a novella rather than a 300 page book. This sweet little story is totally satisfying.

Not sweet at all, left me with a bitter taste

I bought this novella following the great reviews it had. I should have read the reviews more carefully. I despised the heroine from the start. Oh poor dear, the girl is hated but again she is so awful that who would blame anybody for hating her. Of course, some of the reasons behind her behaviour are explained. Bur it would take at least a book (and not just a novella) filled with hardships to redeem her in my eyes. For those who don't remember her, Cara is Lady Larisse that horrible half sister of Jane one of the heroines in a previous book of the author. She is the one that had her sister sacked as if it was not bad enough that she was illegitimate.
The hero felt just too flat. Yes this is a novella but I've read novellas with interesting characters.
Maybe I was expeting better because it is Christi Caldwell. I loved for love of a duke and to love a lord. Not all her books are great but those too were particularly good. Unfortunately, her novellas have not been good at all lately.
I do seriously feel cheated. 0.99 dollars is still too expensive for wasting my time.

Clean Historical

To Wed His Christmas Lady by Christi Caldwell is a wonderful read. Will and Cara's story is entertaining. Ms Caldwell has delivered a well written book with characters that may not start off as lovable but by the end of the book you love them anyway. Along with the great characters, this book has drama and a bit of humor. To Wed His Christmas Lady is fairly short, perfect for those with limited time for reading. It is also a clean read, no sex scenes. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from Christi Caldwell in the future. To Wed His Christmas Lady is book 7 in The Heart Of A Duke Series, but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

This may be a given for ALL voice books, but not knowing whether this is true or not, I spent quite a bit of time trying to find out whether the CD came with this version or not - here's hoping I've saved you a little bit of time! Good for young singers!!

As a middle school choir teacher, this is the go-to resource for starting young singers on their way to learning good singing technique. There is good variety of style, tempo, even languages. This version of "The Water is Wide" is one I've taught for many years. The students love it, and even ask to sing it. The accompaniment CD with this book is easier to follow than others I've used.

Very good choice for beginning repertoire!!

Not satisfied.

There are some errors in the book. For Example, Question # 105 on page 21. If you look at the answer on Page 38 #105 the answer says "B" but that makes no sense and is not the answer. The explanation of the answer makes no sense and does not relate to the question as well. I found other errors as well. Please do a better job editing the entire book. I would have like to see a few more practice exams. I also purchased the flash cards and was disappointed with them because the answers are way to long and should be more concise and brief when you are talking about the nature of flashcards. I wish I could have my money back with the flashcards.
