Steven Brooks develops parallels between nuclear energy and the power gained through fasting and prayer in his book "Fasting and Prayer: God's Nuclear Power."

Never Outdated: Fasting and Prayer For Today

I have heard and seen Steven Brooks on Sid Roth and read his book on angels. I could not wait to sit down and read this book. Steven not only gives scriptural backing needed for fasting and prayer, but also gives numerous examples of what happens when we fast and pray. His take on Franklin Hall's comment about fasting and prayer being like nuclear power is commendable. He eloquently elaborates on Hall's assertion and really makes fasting come alive.

Pastors and speakers, there are quotes by Charles Finney, Dwight L. Moody, Andrew Murray, John Wesley, A.A. Allen, Johnathan Edwards, and Martin Luther. Steven Brooks walks in a miracle-filled life, yet hungers for the still small voice of God. Quotes mean nothing to Steven without the power of God backing up his ministry.

I like the information on The Apostle Thomas, who ministered in India, modern day Pakistan, Iran, and even China. Steven visited the cave in which The Apostle Thomas lived before he was martyred. There he saw memorial signs detailing the healing of the blind, the lame, the lepers, and those who were raised form the dead. Awesome!

Steven tells us great stories about Job and Charles Spurgeon. He also includes a journal on a 21-day fast. I would love to see him write another abook on fasting, telling the stories of what has happened in his church after a called fast for his conregation.

I can't say enough about this book. This is a book to re-read over and over until the scriptures and accompanying stories move from your head into your heart. Don't be surprised to see miracles in your life if you do! Get this book and share this book! Jesus is coming soon! You know you need breakthroughs! FAST AND PRAY.

Better Than Expected

I ordered this after seeing him talk on Sid Roth. He believes the power of fasting to reach spiritual breakthrough. I felt this book would help me reach a greater anointing since I have encountered strong manifestations of the spirit that can't be denied at certain ministries. Steve shares some of his supernatural visitations from Jesus and miracles (which I trust are true), and from other saints who fasted. He outlines how to fast and gives biblical verses. He doesn't go overboard on the biblical verses which I liked. He mentioned the necessary ones and a few others relating to what he was talking about. He recommends you should drink water or juice when fasting, and thinks that Jesus drank water in the desert during his 40 day fast. I don't know if I agree with this, since the bible doesn't say he drank anything. He gives an example where a saint passed out when he tried an extended fast without water. But he also gives a supernatural example of a saint,Padro Pio, who fasted all the time but weighed 190 lbs, and actually gained weight when fasting. This book outweighed my expectations and gave me a good perception how to fast. At end he gives a 21 day journal of one of his personal fasts. This is good because it shows his honesty and human weaknesses. He doesn't give a fake view that it will be easy and all your dreams will come true. He does guarantee that when combined with a prayer life, earnestly seeking God, it will draw you closer into God's presence.

ARE PEOPLE BORN EVIL?

Don't you sometimes wonder if some people are just plain EVIL? Born that way? Greed and ambition can make a person do terrible things, even to their family. They will kill, maim and sacrifice family, even little children. All for that satisfaction of greed and evil.Maybe some people can change but as time goes on, it becomes less and less a chance for change. It only becomes worse. This book is a cross between the rich establishment and a fairytale family reunion that comes undone. This happens as the reader goes through the fast paced present and what happened in the evil and destructive back story. The story is a fast paced read that rips at your heart. The reader just wants an answer, but how can that be when you are dealing with evil? Don't stop at Book One. You will want to read the entire story all the way through Book 3. A total page turner that grips at your heart strings.

Character development is one of Mr. Wells talent. As we read, the female characters become stronger and their personalities grow and become better. Jayne seemed to always be one step ahead when needed. As she became true with herself, she became stronger.Celeste was a surprise. She seemed a bit one sided and didn't seem to have much substance to her. The more you read, the more you see her as a strong, well rounded character.She is a very complex character. Eleanor was the fun character which evened out the other characters.Let's put the women aside and look at Robert. Oh My! He is well educated, handsome, an outdoors man, rich and a real gentleman. He works hard for his father's business, and always looks at what others have to say.From page one you can't stop turning the pages. The pace never slowed. Can't wait to read another book by Mike Wells. Simply makes your heart beat hard. The ending will really surprise you but you will be happy with it. Romance is at the core of the ending.

It's Not A Novel - It's An Experience!!

Pre-Read:
H. P. Lovecraft may been my all-time favorite author, but Mike Wells is my favorite living one. His writing has not disappointed me, and I have read a lot of his novels. He writes with cinematic imagery and excellent emotional tension. I was really excited when asked to read the ARC, and couldn’t possibly decline!!

Characters:
One thing Mike Wells does really well (Okay, he does a lot of things really well) is character development. We get to see the maturity of these strong female leads grow, and see their personalities flourish. I loved how Jayne handled the entire situation, as was always one step ahead when she needed to be. She finally became honest with herself, and it made her personality stronger.

Celeste really surprised me. (She also has the name of my friend’s dog.) She seemed like a bit of a one-sided character, without much to her. However, the more you read, the more it becomes evident that she is actually a well-rounded character with plenty of complexities that make her who she is. Her behavior is a reflection of that.

Eleanor surprised me, too, but in a different way. I absolutely loved how he wrote her character. She was so much fun to read! I was reminded of the actress Jessica Lange. ((SUPREME))

Robert was so…*SIGH* He loves literature, is gorgeous, loves the outdoors, knows how to manage his fortune, and is such a gentleman. He takes others interest into account when making any decision, and he works hard for his father’s business. I would marry that man in a heart-beat! My husband would learn to adapt. ;D

Overall:
I loved it!! I was so drawn in from the first page, and it never dragged on at all. This is has been a major issue with some of the books I’ve read recently – Not of his – so it was a refreshing read. I can always count of Mike Wells to deliver the literary goods.

The plot was INCREDIBLY surprising. I seriously did not see that coming, and it blind-sided me as much as it did Jayne.

The ending was so not what I predicted, and I couldn’t have been more satisfied with it. It was so romantic…and perfect…and…and…*SSSIIIIIIIIIIGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH*

When it comes to Mike Wells’ novels, you aren’t just reading – you’re having an experience.

When I first read of the incredibly self-centred and hateful young, pregnant girl I didn't think there was anything about her that would interest me. Then I wondered whatever happened to her. THEN I began to figure it out! I wouldn't want to ever be involved with such a terrible person, but it certainly was entertaining reading about her! There are more than a few surprises and twists in this tale...the further along I read, the more it gripped me. Definitely worth a read!! *****

Not what I had expected

Honestly, this novel might not even rate the three stars I have given it, but I was feeling generous.

This book reads a great deal like someone's home MechWarrior role-playing game. The main character starts out with nothing, and attempts to recruit his former neighbors and family members to his cause. The rejection leads him to Solaris VII, where he must fight to gain the materiel he needs for his personal vendetta. He is there but a few days before leaving for Outreach to find a contract for his new merc unit, and to recruit more personnel. Everything works out relatively neat and tidy. It just does not read like a good novel, with the convenience of events and the results.

Also, given the back cover text, I had expected more along the lines of a Solaris-set novel, but the story stays on that world for a comparatively short time. Much more time is spent on the world that the unit is contracted to defend. And the antagonism there again reads like something from a poorly-designed RPG campaign, with the local strife resulting in an action by that planet's leaders unlike any other in the Battletech universe. The story climaxes with combat against Clan invaders, with the occasional pointless death thrown in, I assume to highlight the random savagery of war, but seemingly tacked on as an afterthought.

I was really disappointed in this novel. Note, however, that the sequel is vastly superior and very much worth the read, while this one is sure to languish on my shelf without getting a second read.

Uhhh, wow... If you like GOOD books, then stay away.

Alright, how do I say this simply?

It seems as if this book was written by a 14 year old, unfortunately...
It seems the other might have had multiple personalities while writing. It has multiple errors and a child-like story. The characters alone, such as "rose" the main character, are very poorly developed, seeming at one moment to be very intellectual, and the next, a complete retard attacking a cop, because of a sarcastic comment. Not only that, but conversation dialog is extremely hard to follow, for the lack of mention of who's talking, so you are left to guess at which one is speaking at which time. And the descriptions? Oh well, constantly switches from 3rd person, to 1st person, back to 3rd person, and to mix it up, let's throw another character in 1st person in the same paragraph.

Just, i'm 1/4th through the book, and the only reason I'm even Considering finishing this child-like book, is for the information regarding the battletech timeline.

If you are looking to further your battletech knowledge, read it...
Otherwise looking for a good battletech adventure??
Go read the Jade Phoenix Trilogy...
That's a series, anyone can enjoy.

One of the better Battletech books, but the sequal is better

Despite what some other reviewers will tell you, this one ranks right up their with Stackpole. Good character development, and tying together different elements of a character. The desensitization of war caused on Solaris is covered well, sometimes a bit too obviously. The battle is interesting, and the story of Turkyyaid shows a 'soldier's eye' view. The battle against the Clans is a little too easy towards the end, and I regret not telling a little more about Comstar. Some parts of the good old Order must be more nonsecular than others for him to be able to leave that easily. This is well-written, and is necessary to enjoy D.R.T., but the second one is better. I only wish their was a third Black Thorn story.

Pretty good information

I saw this book in a Vet' s waiting room and thought it may be helpful after a brief skimming over. I am a hobby breeder of a rare dog breed so only have a litter of puppies every 1 1/2 to 2 years. I was mostly interested in the genetic information. I found it fairly easy to understand and it shed a differing perspective for me on breeding for health and diversity. Q is a lot of information for the person who has multiple dogs and breed more often than I do. There was good information on appropriate kennel construction for health and safety, diet and nutrition ( if you feed kibble, which I do not) and whelping & puppy rearing. I general, it was well rounded and I got it aT a good price as a used book. Delivery was timely and it arrived in the condition as described by the seller. I gave it 3 stars, since I cannot use a lot of the information based on my breeding and feeding practice.

Bittersweet ending to an amazing career

The first two-thirds of "The Salmon of Doubt", as assembled by Douglas Adams' editor, consists of essays, lectures, magazine articles, and other short pieces written by Adams. It is an interesting glimpse into his mind, his work habits, his love of computers and gadgets, and his views on religion, atheism, and evolution. As an added bonus, the last third of the book contains the first eleven chapters of what was meant to be Adams' new Dirk Gently novel (although he tantalizingly hinted in interviews that he might turn it into a sixth "Hitchhiker's" book), also named "The Salmon of Doubt."

The essay/article portion of the book, while interesting, does have an unavoidably hodgepodge feel to it. Most of this material will be familiar to diehard Douglas Adams fans (in fact, much of it has already been printed elsewhere - little here is new material), but it is nice to have it all gathered together in one place. Unfortunately, no index or table of contents is provided, so finding a particular piece is rather challenging.

The portion of the book actually devoted to "The Salmon of Doubt" is very intriguing. As the editor notes, the eleven chapters are stitched together from three separate "versions" of the novel that Adams was working on at the time of his death. As a result, some of the chapter transitions are very choppy (and of course the story sputters out without a proper ending, although this does seem vaguely appropriate for a Dirk Gently novel). However, I found chapters two through seven of the book to be very engaging; a bit rough, certainly, but this was shaping up to be a great Dirk Gently novel. It was with sadness that I reached the end of this story and realized that there would be no ending, and further, no other novels from Douglas Adams.

I don't fault the editor for assembling the story the way he's chosen to, as an amalgam of three different manuscripts - I'm sure this would have been his suggestion even if Adams were still alive. Still, I would love to see a completely "unedited" version of the novel, i.e., one that includes all three working versions; I think that would be fascinating to read. It's certainly a tease to know that certain parts of the different versions were skipped over in assembling this edition.

Having said that, I still do think this book is a must-own if you're a fan of Douglas Adams and his work, due to the inclusion of the unfinished novel. However, when reading "The Salmon of Doubt", you must be prepared to read an unpolished, unfinished story; if you're able to read it in this frame of mind, it's actually very rewarding.

Heartbreakingly interrupted.

He made hitchhiking a universal thing.

Literally.
Douglas Adams, author of the five books in the vastly popular comic-space saga "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" trilogy (you did indeed read that correctly), plus an assortment of other novels, died in May 2001.
Now comes a posthumous collection of his writings, called "The Salmon of Doubt,"�which allows his fans one last, gentle look at a revolutionary voice in literature and science-fiction.
"Salmon" is very much a toast to Adams, a eulogy to him.
The assembled writings are fabulous, culled from a massive selection of writings, letters, essays, various introductions and other things from Adams' computer.
The title refers to an included unfinished Dirk Gently book which, had he lived, might have turned into the sixth "Hitchhiker" book.
Other points of interest:
The first published work of twelve-year-old Douglas Adams, a letter to the editor to "The Eagle," a popular boys' magazine.
"Y," in which Adams helpfully points out that the question "Why?" is the only one important enough to have had a letter named after it.
"Riding the Rays," in which Adams gets the idea to compare riding a new technological submarine, the "Sub Bug," to riding manta rays off the coast of Manta Ray Bay near Australia, the rejection of his proposal when it comes to riding the rays and, upon discovering a manta in said bay, his ease with giving up the pursuit of a ride. Quite possibly the best entry in the whole book.
"Is There an Artificial God?" is an interesting speech from Adams on his aetheism, as he breaks downb his non-belief into steps and explores the contrasts between science and religion.
"Cookies," in which Adams finds himself plagued by the most horrid of human entities: The cookie thief. Or does he?
A letter to Disney's unresponsive David Vogel leaving a chart of numbers at which Adams can possibly be reached.
"The Private Life of Genghis Khan": A woman whose village has just been pillaged and burnt to the ground by the Mongol now finds herself right next to him, with one of his warriors forcing her to ask the mighty Khan how his day was...
It is almost spooky how, in a review/essay of P.G. Wodehouse's unfinished novel "Sunset at Blandings," Adams laments the fact that Wodehouse's final work is "unfinished not�just in the sense that it suddenly, heartbreakingly for those of us who love this man and his work, stops in midflow, but in the more important sense that the text up to that point is also unfinished."
Heartbreakingly stopped in midflow, unfinished? The same can be said of Adams himself.

Farewell, Douglas

The world was robbed of one it's greatest and funniest writers on May 11, 2001, when Douglas Adams, author of the hugely popular "Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy" and "Dirk Gently" books, died from a heart attack at the age of 49. As a writer, Adams was a true original. His style of humor was gloriously funny, and he certainly had a most unique way with words. His final book, the posthumous release "The Salmon Of Doubt," is a collection of assorted writings, including essays, e-mails, interviews, lectures and letters that Adams had given or written over the years, as well as an unfinished third "Dirk Gently" novel that Adams had been sporadically working on for many years. Much of the material was culled from the disk drives of Adams' collection of Macintosh computers, and we, Adams' faithful readers, can certainly be grateful for these golden DNA nuggets. The book contains such gems as Adams discussing his childhood, his nose, his friendship with dogs Maggie and Trudie, his great introduction to Procol Harum (a favorite band of Adams AND myself) just before they take the stage, his advice about how to make a cup of really good tea, his attempts to get "Hitchhiker's" made as a feature film (which *finally* happened in 2005), and his lecture about the existence of an artificial God. There's also a hilarious sketch about Genghis Khan, a short "Hitchhiker's" story involving Zaphod Beeblebrox, and, finally, 11 chapters of the unfinished Dirk Gently novel, entitled "The Salmon Of Doubt," which, although it is quite obviously an unpolished work-in-progress, is still very funny (though I'm saddened that we'll never know what happens to Dirk after Chapter 11, which is a terrible shame). Douglas Adams had so much more left to give to this world, he had so much more left to write. But we can take comfort in the great, hysterically funny gifts he did leave us---"Hitchhiker's" (not only the books but also the radio & TV series, and the feature film), "Dirk Gently," the travelogue book "Last Chance To See" (which succeeds as a serious piece sprinkled with great humor throughout), and his writing for the "Doctor Who" TV series. Douglas, as a longtime fan of yours, I just want to thank you for all the good cheer you've given me over the years. I will treasure your work & your memory 'til the end of my days, and perhaps even after that. "The Salmon Of Doubt" is a very fond farewell to the late, great Douglas Noel Adams.
