An excellent graduate course in probability

(This review is based on the second Russian edition printed in 1986. The contents of English edition seems to be a bit extended version of the Russian one.)
This is a very good exposition to probability theory at the professional level. I like it much more than I do Billingsley's "Probability and Measure" (which is a collection of essays on probability theory, sometimes only vaguely related a few chapters apart from each other, while Borovkov is a very consistent course which has the same level of rigor as Billingsley does, and which also proves some subtle but appreciable things not mentioned in Billingsley). It has a bit different flavor of tending to prove things via characteristic functions rather than directly with the cesnored random variables as in Billinsley's book. It does not cover as much measure theory as Billingsley does, and I suspect that the book implicitly assumes the student to be familiar with a standard Russian reference on functional analysis by Kolmogorov and Fomin that has an extensive treatment of Lebesgue integration. It is also nice that it has a lot of examples discussed in the text (rather than given as exercises) that help to cement the concepts. They make the text quite lively, too. Sometimes I had to spend a minute or two thinking why they believe a statement in a proof is self-evident, though.
The book starts with with the introduction of probability spaces, goes on to random variables, then to the laws of large numbers, convergence notions, and the CLTs. It also discusses renewal theory, factorization identities, Markov chains, information and entropy, martingales, continuous time stocastic processes, functional limit theorems, and Markov processes, with some measure theory stuff and a couple of more difficult theorems (extension of a measure, Kolmogorov theorem on consistent distributions, theorems of Helly and Arcela--Ascoli) given in appendices. Thus it covers more than a semester of probability theory, giving some initial reading for some four or so advanced courses. The author suggests to use the bulk of the material in the first ten or twelve chapters for a required semester course, with the rest of the book viewed as the material for shorter elective courses. The book helped me greatly in my probability theory comprehensive exam, as well as in my stochastic calculus and stochastic processes courses.
It is a pity that the book is rather expensive -- I am happy to have it in the original language on which this review is actually based.
Of historical interest it is that A.Borovkov is Kolmogorov's student.

Though this is the fifth book in a five-book re-release from Silhouette Books. I thoroughly enjoyed books 1 through 4 and I can tell you that King's Ransom is a fitting end to this special re-release!
DON'T miss this golden opportunity to put your hands on a winner! I've always been a fan of stories featuring rough and rugged ranchers and King McCandless fits the bill! When King's love interest, young and innocent Jesse LeBeau is ruthlessly attacked in her home in St. Louis one night, King gets the news and comes to the rescue in all his glory (and he's even got a white horse!). King brings Jesse home where she can mend her tortured spirit surrounded by friends and family who will keep her safe....or will they? It's fairly easy to figure out whose the bad guy half-way through the story, but this by no means takes away a minute of your reading pleasure. There are plenty of twists and turns and questions to be answered by the end of the book. After reading this book, who wouldn't wish they had their very own "King"?

A True Treasure and Inspirational Read

I love this book. In it, Shane takes you through his inspirational journey to find the float cure. He also dives deeper into the benefits of floating and where it first began. One thing I really enjoyed was that he doesn't just talk about how floating can help with stress, but actually dives into what causes stress and how we can eliminate it from our lives in different ways. Throughout the book Shane uses the perfect mixture of professional insight, research and facts, as well as testimonials from floaters who have benefitted from the practice in a handful of ways. This book is for all audiences including people who have or have never floated in their life because it's relatable and easier to comprehend than other books in the industry. Overall, I highly would recommend this book to anyone interested in floating and living a happy, peaceful and balanced life.

This book is a perfect and simplistic introduction to floating. So much of the current floating literature is written for those who already float or are in the float community, and this book is the perfect jumping off point for those of us who wanted to learn the basics — float tank 411, the physical benefits of floating, the mental benefits of floating, inspirational stories and first hand accounts. Shane has done a great job crafting the history and beauty of floating into a clear, concise, and easy to read book.

Easy to follow guide to healthy eating

In "The Mediterranean Diet for Beginners" you'll find that exact combination - an easy to follow, no nonsense approach to more healthy eating emphasizing lean meats, lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and little to no processed food along with a lot of references to primary research resources demonstrating the value of this diet.

While the obvious chapters organize the book - breakfast, lunch, dinner etc - it also provides some sample daily menu plans, and includes links to those recipes later in the book. In that way, the book allows you a couple different ways to get started along with lots of different combinations and suggestions. The recipes have few ingredients that don't require a lot of shopping or buying ingredients you'll never use again, and are easy to follow regardless of your cooking skills.

This is a MUST read!

"The Mediterranean Diet for Beginners" was a helpful, fun, enticing and informative book. This is no ordinary cookbook, folks. Aside from being chocked full of delicious recipes for any time of day, the book began by explaining the importance, and incredible benefits, of the Mediterranean diet.
It really helped me to learn simple, easy ways that I can eat delicious food in a healthier way by making simple substitutions, such as swapping out loads of butter for flavorful olive oil. I also had no idea that you could make your breads and pastas so much more nutritious simply by switching to whole grains and whole wheat flour.
I really liked how most of the recipes explained how you could make unique meals out of the leftovers. My favorite recipe was the herb-roasted chicken. It sounds so flavorful with the fresh thyme, rosemary and bay leaf. My mouth was watering just reading it! I will definitely be making that this week.
From weight loss help to 10 tips for success to delicious recipes, this book is a MUST read.

A great book - information overload

This is a very useful reference to have if you work extensively on HPLC. I find its of more use to understand concepts ...there is a lot of information here.
Which means - if you are looking for a solution to a problem and you want to research separation theory - a great book.
If your looking for a quick fix to an HPLC problem - not as good. This is a detailed, extensive and well written text on HPLC Method development - wish there was more on validation here though.

Best book on development of HPLC separations

This is the best book of which I know, on the development of HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatographic) separations.

However, there have been important changes in HPLC since this edition, especially with smaller diameter particles for packing materials.

I wish Wiley would prod the authors on an update.

Read this, Do this

This book came to me right after it was published and a year after my diagnosis with melanoma in 1974. Because I was young and dumb and self convinced that I was cured (all in all not a bad thing) I did not apply the concepts to cancer. However I have applied the practice twice for other things and can say they worked for me. Now when I have a friend diagnosed I give them this book and tell them to do everything their doctor tells them to do and do this too. It gives one a much needed sense of control over what is happening to yourself as well as knowing you are really participating in your cure and journey back to good health. The concepts are important and timeless. Here's to good, robust health for all of us!

Emotional Respite

Recently diagnosed with cancer, a good friend and professional therapist in NYC recommended that I read this recently reprinted classic which offers among other self-help concepts, that of visualization therapy and exercises. The reprint and update of this book comes at a time when I needed any assistance for understanding and getting my head around the news of a serious illness. In addition, happily it also came at a time when the dignity of "imaginative visualization" has recently been raised by new evidence that it really does work for some people. Nevertheless, for me, the book was interesting to read, informative, hopeful, helpful, comforting and more. After I read it, among my thoughts, was to be grateful to have had it recommended to me...for this 64 year-old man, has never been one accustomed to reading "self-help" books on emotional topics. While here and on this subject it occurs to me to note that I have also discovered, through the very kind suggestion of the same and astute good friend, the books and meditation CDs of Belleruth Naparstek. They provide, for me, great comfort and confidence. Thank you.

Highly recommended by a cancer survivor!

When I was diagnosed with cancer 3 years ago, I found this book on Amazon.com. It was an empowering and refreshing take on cancer management and treatment. When you have cancer you sometimes feel everything is out of your control. This book helped me to understand that there were many things I could still control about my disease and how I chose to cope with it. And yes, I meditated and used healing imagery!! I also ate healthy foods, exercised and kept working even though I felt like I had a hangover for 6 months. Like anything, you take the parts of this book's methodology that work for you and use them. It would be foolish to stop your treatment against your physician's advice just because you read a book. But it is also foolish to sit back and expect the doctors to cure you without participating and doing your part--including helping your body heal itself, whether physically or emotionally. In no way did this book make me feel like having cancer was my fault.
Now, I am cancer free and I am re-ordering the book for my cousin's husband who was just diagnosed with prostate cancer. I hope that he will enjoy it as much as I did. No, it doesn't replace traditional treatment, but at least the authors encourage you to take control of your destiny.
By the way, I ran a marathon exactly one year after the day of my last chemo treatment. Anyone who thinks positive thinking, healing imagery, meditation and "mind over matter" is a bunch of new-age hype, is welcome to join me on my next 26.2 mile run!!
