Essentials for Students

I highly recommend this book for students as a supplementary text for the year long organic chemistry course sequence. I have taught organic chemistry at a liberal arts college for many years and have seen many students become overwhelmed with organic right from the start of the first semester. As a supplement to a student's instructor and course text, this book by Sloop helps get students off to a fast start by focusing on the essentials. It is written for students and as such, is concise, easy to read, and focuses on material students must master early in order to be successful in the year long organic sequence. My students who have used the book tell me they couldn't have survived organic without it. I have seen many other similar student study aids for organic and this is one of the best. I have also recommended it to my former students who are reviewing organic chemistry to get prepared for the MCAT, DAT, PCAT and other professional schools entrance exams. I have a copy of Sloop's book myself and have incorporated much of it directly in my lectures.

Kindle version doesn't work right!

I bought the Kindle version of this book, and after reading for a few hours, and I was finally getting to the important stuff, I came across a whole lot of pages that didn't work right. The pages that didn't work was like a scanned picture of a page from the paper version, with no possibility to zoom, which made it really hard to read. After reading one page like that my eyes were so strained that I just put the book down, and haven't read any more in it.
Too bad, really, because the part that I did get to read was pretty good. But it was a waste of money for me when I'm not able to read the whole book.

Great resource for programming beats

Chris's book as taken a lot of the tedious work out of my midi drum programming. He breaks down the various components of popular beats in various genres so that you can understand the logic behind the midi note placement. His midi files helped me to link the visual placement of notes and how they produce what they do in a beat. Chris has also been very helpful when I have had questions. His customer service is excellent. If you have ever been puzzled with programming beats, this is a great resource.

I purchased the .pdf version of this book before it was on Amazon. There is a lot of information communicated very clearly in a very condensed way, which could only have been done by someone with a long-standing command of the material. If drum programming is something arcane and mysterious to you this is a great resource to clear up a lot very quickly, and there's enough stylistic diversity for more experienced producers to find something of value as well. Highly recommended.

A really useful and clear guide which helped me quite a bit in my drum programming! I especially appreciated the ideas in the Humanize and Fills section. Chris is able to break down complex ideas into bite-sized easy-to-understand chunks. The MIDI examples were spot on and helpful. I would highly recommend this to anyone just getting into drum programming but also to the more experienced producer looking for new ideas and insight.

About the Author

Dahlia K. Remler is Professor at the School of Public Affairs, Baruch College, and the Department of Economics, Graduate Center, both of the City University of New York. She is also a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research.

Dahlia has been in an unusual mix of disciplinary and interdisciplinary settings. She received a BS in electrical engineering from the University of California at Berkeley, a DPhil in physical chemistry from Oxford University―while a Marshall Scholar―and a PhD in economics from Harvard University. During the Clinton administration’s health care reform efforts, Dahlia held a fellowship at the Brookings Institution to finish her dissertation on health care cost containment. She then held a postdoctoral research fellowship at Harvard Medical School, followed by assistant professorships at Tulane’s and Columbia’s Schools of Public Health, prior to joining the faculty at Baruch. She enjoys comparing and contrasting how different disciplines see the same issues.

Dahlia has published widely in a variety of areas in health care policy, including health care cost containment, information technology in health care, cigarette tax regressivity, simulation methods for health insurance take-up, and health insurance and health care markets. She has also recently started working on higher education and media issues. Her work has appeared in the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management, Health Affairs, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the American Journal of Public Health, Medical Care Research and Review, and many other journals. She blogs on health care policy, higher education and other topics at DahliaRemler.com.

Dahlia lives with her husband, Howard, in New York City, where they enjoy the city’s theaters, restaurants, and parks―and Dahlia enjoys being a complete amateur dancer in some of the city’s superb dance studios.

Gregg G. Van Ryzin is Professor at the School of Public Affairs and Administration, Rutgers University―Newark. He received his BA in geography from Columbia University and his PhD in psychology from the City University of New York. During his doctoral training, he worked as a planner for a nonprofit housing and community development organization in New York City, and he completed his dissertation on low income housing for the elderly in Detroit. He next worked in Washington, D.C., for ICF Inc. and later Westat, Inc. on surveys and program evaluations for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and other federal agencies. In 1995, he joined the faculty of the School of Public Affairs, Baruch College, where he directed their Survey Research Unit for 8 years. In that role, he helped develop and direct the New York City Community Health Survey, a large-scale behavioral health survey for the city’s health department, and also played a key role in shaping and conducting the city’s survey of satisfaction with government services. He has spent time in Madrid, collaborating with researchers there on the analysis of surveys about public attitudes toward Spanish government policy.

Gregg has published many scholarly articles on housing and welfare programs, survey and evaluation methods, and public opinion about government services and institutions. His work has appeared in the International Review of Administrative Sciences, the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management, the Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, the Journal of Urban Affairs, Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, Public Administration Review, Public Management Review, Public Performance and Management Review, Urban Affairs Review, and other journals.

Gregg lives in New York City with his wife, Ada (a history professor at NYU), and their daughters Alina and Lucia. They enjoy life in their Greenwich Village neighborhood, escaping on occasion to Spain, Miami, Maine, Cuba, and other interesting places in the world.

An accessible book for research methods

This is a great book, especially for readers who are trying to get a clear, accessible overview of research methods. I used this text in a graduate-level intermediate research and analysis course, and wish I had it for my first research and analysis course as well!

The chapters provide real world applications of theory, and progress naturally - but can also be read isolated. The chapter summaries are strong and contain a decent amount of questions that reference the chapter's material very well. If you go over the questions, the chapters will stick with you, and the material will come naturally.

The statistics overview is very strong, I suggest going over these chapters before exploring any of the technical material.

A great reference book as well, I've used it when I needed to cover topics ranging from multiple regression to difference in differences studies.

Broad but shallow

Of the 1030 pages in this book, approximately 250 pages are spent on a Pentium assembly-language tutorial -- while barely 40 pages are spent on all of memory-caching. Virtual memory gets another 20 pages. USB gets 10 pages, IEEE 1394 gets 5 pages, and PCI gets a whopping 12 pages. There's no discussion of the current APIC interrupt controller (vital for multi-processor systems), while the outdated 8259 PIC chip is presented as the interrupt controller of choice for Pentium systems.

As a practicing engineer, I seriously question both the topics the author has chosen and the weight he has given to them.

This book is very hard to follow.

I and the students I worked with found this book to be a very difficult introduction to computer hardware. This book assumes its readers understand the topic much better than a sophomore/junior computer science major does. It then proceeds to explain only the most complex details.

This one is a hit out of the park!

Sometimes you read an author for the first time and you know you are going to have a long and happy relationship with her or him and that’s exactly what I’m feeling after reading Rhonda Shaw’s The Changeup. I loved her attention to detail, the fact that this book centers around the best sport in the world, that she wrote an older heroine with a younger hero, the fact that even though her hero is a professional athlete he isn’t a man-whore, and best of all she showed that there are young men out there that can be mature even at a young age. Yes, that’s a whole lot of plusses for Ms. Shaw and I’m so happy to add her to my must read author list. The Changeup is flat out an entertaining May-December romance with a hero who knows his mind and won’t allow the heroine to use her hang-ups and issues to keep them from being together.

Divorced for 9 years single-mom Maddie Hamlin has decided to give up dating. As much as she’d love a man in her life and one to be a good male role model for her daughter, she’s tired of the hassles and disappointment of dating. When her niece brings rookie pitching sensation Chase Patton to a family dinner she’s amazed at how he relates to her daughter and visa versa. She also thinks her body has gone haywire when she begins to experience some lust for this much younger man. However, Chase seems to have some trouble dealing with his sensual thoughts as well.

I honestly don’t know when I’ve enjoyed a younger man character as much as I have Chase. I love that he respects his family but he makes up his own mind about his life. The way he jumps in with Maddie’s daughter, Bree, amazes me and they bond they form early on shows what a caring guy he is. He impressed me with his acceptance of the age difference and the way he worked to get back all of Maddie’s trust issues and break down all of her reasons for them not being together. This is a young man who has his head on straight which is a testament to his parents and his work ethic.
Maddie is a little bit of a mess but given her creep of an ex-husband and her witch of a sister, it’s no wonder she lacks self esteem and feels worthy of anything. She is a great Mom there is no doubt of that and would do anything for her daughter which at times makes her forget about her own happiness. She’s one of those people who doesn’t make waves and avoids confrontations which is why people tend to walk over her must to Chase’s objection.

Excuse me for going there but holy hell their intimate scenes are World Series hot! Proving that age has no place in the bedroom, if the heat and attraction is there it can’t help but be good!

Filled with emotions, some drama on and off the field, well meaning friends, meddling family members, and some good old fashion lust that turns to love makes The Changeup one hell of a grand slam offering from author Rhonda Shaw. I can’t wait to see who is up next in this series, I’m warming the bench waiting!

Home Run!

Whenever I start to read a book from an author that's new to me, I always cross my fingers and hope for the best. Thankfully, except for a couple of minor things, Rhonda Shaw's book, The Changeup, didn't disappoint.

The Changeup is basically a May-December romance between 34 year old single Mom, Maddie and 22 year old baseball player, Chase. There's nothing particularly unique to this May-December book in comparison to other similar style books, although how this couple first meet is a bit unexpected.

However, what I did enjoy is the author's writing style. I really liked that there was a dual POV, which gave you insight into how Maddie and Chase really felt about each other and how they felt about the relationship they were trying to navigate together.

I also enjoyed how the author showed that age has really nothing to do with the amount of confidence you may have in yourself and in how you handle life's curve balls. I know, I know. Life's curve balls. I couldn't resist. :)

On the one hand, there's Maddie, who may be older, but isn't confident that Chase really wants her and her daughter in his life. On the other hand, there's Chase, who may be younger, but has every confidence that Maddie and her daughter can make him very happy. In fact, he has confidence enough for both of them.

Unfortunately, road blocks ensue, but because of them, you get an even better sense of the kind of man Chase is. I really appreciated how he still kept reaching out to Maddie's daughter, even when Maddie herself herself off. Just a side note about Maddie, while I understood her reasons for making the decision she did, I wish that her character had a bit more backbone.

Eventually, with help from friends and family, this couple found their way back together and it was a happy ending.

Overall, this was a good book that I enjoyed reading and I look forward to reading this author's next book, The Ace.

THE CHANGEUP

What a riveting story of a pure innocent love a 22 year old young man, Chase Patton, feels for older single mother, Maddie Hamlin. She is 12 years older than him, making her 34 years old and if that wasn’t enough her daughter is nine years old adding to the whole situation.
The difference with their relationship that is different is Chase is a professional baseball player and so much more mature, just ask anyone. In fact he is one of the highest paid young athletics paid directly out of high school. He is such a good pitcher and has such control on the ball and control of the head on his shoulders (and the other one too.) He is not one to go out drinking or partying. No wild women or staying out real late in fact they call him “Grandpa.” For this he only stayed in the minors for a very short while. When he met Maddie it was love at first sight. He knew what he wanted and he went after it just like baseball. Bree was a bonus as far as he was concerned an awesome one.
So, once he came off the road trip he was on, he started making a point of dropping by. Which was easy since they were neighbors. His teammate, “Smutty,” and he have a condo they share a couple of doors down. After a few visits he got his nerve up and asked her out. She didn’t think it was a good idea due to their age although she was highly attracted to him. He kept talking she finally agreed. One thing led to another and bang they are a couple. It is not an easy the road is not smooth and she is shaky to begin with. He goes on another road trip and all hell breaks loose on her while he is gone. She is forced to break up with him. Not of her making and their lives are at their lowest emotionally, spiritually and his job is paying for it. She is force to break up with him though to keep what she has safe and protected. See what happens. You do not want to miss it. It was tastefully done and taps on a lot of issues that a relationship of this type would come up against. Truthful as well as insightful.
I loved, loved, loved this book. Emotions are amazingly pure, sexy as hell, and I love Chase. You have to read, “The Ace” you will love it too. Karen and Smutty are wonderful characters and they are so funny together but there is also a lot of emotions in that one too. 5 stars. Provided by Net Galley.

About the Author

About the Author

Elsie Jones-Smith is a clinical psychologist, a licensed psychologist, a counselor educator, and the president of the Strengths-Based Institute, which provides consultation to schools and organizations dealing with youth experiencing challenges with violence, lack of a sense of purpose, and drug addiction. She is the developer of two theories in psychology: strengths-based therapy (SBT) and ethnic identity development; an article about this theory was featured as a major contribution to psychological research by The Counseling Psychologist in 1985. She is a member of the�American Academy of Counseling Psychology, and a fellow in two divisions of the American Psychological Association, including Division 17 Counseling Psychology. She holds dual PhDs in clinical psychology and counselor education. She is the author of Strengths-Based Therapy: Connecting Theory, Practice, and Skills; Spotlighting the Strengths of Every Single Student;�and Nurturing Nonviolent Children. Previously a professor at Temple University, Michigan State University, and Boston University, she has served on numerous editorial boards.

nor the most fun for most students

As I think back to my preparation to be a counselor and counselor educator, the most interesting course that I took exposed me to the theories of counseling and to the men and women who composed those theories. I really appreciated how the theorists used their keen insights to formulate how this action called “counseling” or “psychotherapy” worked for them. I have been a counselor educator for forty years, and because of that longevity, I had the pleasure early in my career to spend time with John Krumboltz, Carl Thoresen, Carl Rogers, Albert Ellis, William Glasser, and Rollo May. They made their approaches to counseling come alive for me, and in the absence of those individuals in my classroom and on the current counseling scene, I believe it is my job to bring counseling theory alive for my students. Realizing that counseling theory is not the easiest subject for students to grasp, nor the most fun for most students, I have searched for years for a textbook that communicates excitement for theory and also for the value of each theoretical approach for its time in the history of counseling and psychotherapy.

In 2011, I found Elsie Jones-Smith’s (2011) Theories of counseling and psychotherapy: An integrative approach, and in using it with my students, it has really help bring counseling theories alive for my students. Jones-Smith has revised her textbook with a second edition, and I am even more excited by it than I was by the first edition. The text is both historical in helping students envision the evolution of counseling and psychotherapy and foundational, for it grounds the reader in each of the recognized approaches to the subject matter. In “Part I: The First Force in Psychotherapy: Psychoanalysis and Psychodynamic Theories,” Jones-Smith introduces Freud and the newer forms of psychoanalysis and then moves to a very thorough introduction of the Alderian approach. “Part II: The Second Force in Psychotherapy: Behavioral Therapy and Cognitive Therapy” contains three chapters, “Behavioral Therapy and Integrated Psychopharmacology,” “Cognitive Approaches to Psychotherapy,” and “Reality/Choice Therapy.” These are dynamic chapters for me, and I am particularly gratified that psychopharmacology is included in the text, for it has become the most powerful behavioral approach. Although out of the realm of use by counselors and psychotherapists, professional counselors must know about individual medications and understand the mechanisms of psychoactive drugs.

“Part III: The Third Force in Psychotherapy: Existential and Humanistic Theories” presents chapters on “Existential Therapy,” “Person-Centered Therapy,” “Gestalt Therapy,” “Motivational Interviewing and the Stages of Change Theory,” and “The Expressive Arts Therapies.” The latter two chapters make a significant contribution to counselor education, for they expand the traditional role of the counselor and enable understanding and appreciation of approaches that are practiced but not always by trained professionals. In “Part IV: The Fourth Force in Psychotherapy: Social Constructivism and Postmodernism,” Jones-Smith moves the reader into much broader thinking about approaches to counseling. There are chapters entitled “Multicultural Psychotherapy Theories,” “Transcultural Psychotherapy: Bridges to Asia, Africa, and the Middle East,” “Feminist Therapy and Lesbian and Gay Therapy.” “Solution-Focused Therapy,” “Narrative Therapy,” “Integrating Spiritual/Religious Issues During Psychotherapy,” “Strengths-Based Therapy,” and “Family Therapy Approaches.” I have used this section in the previous edition to help students pay attention to their clients’ cultural formation and life experiences, for these elements not only enable the counselor to understand the workings of the client but also draw upon strategies that may help the client relate to the counselor. The chapter on “Solution-Focused Therapy” is one that is favored by students, for it is written in a way that enables them to quickly implement this approach in their practice. Finally, Jones-Smith as been an author of previous material on “Strengths-Based Therapy,” and her coverage of this particular chapter is exceptionally strong. The final section of the text is entitled “Part V: The Fifth Force in Psychotherapy: Neuroscience and Theories of Psychotherapy.” Jones-Smith concludes the text with chapters on “Comparing and Contrasting the Theories of Psychotherapy” and “Integrating Psychotherapy: Constructing Your Own Integrative Approach to Therapy,” but she has added a profoundly important chapter on “Neuroscience, Psychotherapy, and Neuropsychotherapy.” The content of this chapter may be over the head of most master’s students in counselor education, but it is still vitally important, for in many ways, it is the foundation for therapy in the decades to come, and it has been missing from the study of counseling theory for a long time. I consider this chapter the most exciting in the text, although this declaration is not intended to detract from the other chapters.

In conclusion, I believe that Jones-Smith’s (2016) Theories of counseling and psychotherapy: An integrative is the most exciting and engaging counseling theories text available, today. It is comprehensive in its coverage of the theories that master’s and doctoral level counselors, psychotherapists, and clinical and counseling psychologists should know and understand. It is well written and easily read and assimilated by students. It contains the powerful and engaging tool entitled “Theoretical Orientation Scale” by Jones-Smith that, if used at the beginning of the theories course, moves students from apprehensive to excited and eager to learn about the theoretical orientations that seem to fit them and those that seem to fit their classmates.

"Several years ago it was my pleasure to become acquainted with Dr. Elsie Jones-Smith's insightful text THEORIES OF COUNSELING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY and having used it repeatedly in teaching graduate level courses for marriage and family therapy students, I've found her work to be a veritable treasure chest packed with delightful discoveries! Not only does Dr. Jones-Smith explore many of the traditional theories of personality, she surprises readers with pleasant and informative explorations of some of the more recent schools, including discussions on "Motivational Interviewing," "Expressive Art Therapies," "Japanese, Chinese, African, Arabian, Approaches to Psychotherapy," etc, as well as very capable presentations on several "post modern" theories, such as "Solution Focused" and "Narrative Therapy" models. In my opinion, Dr. Jones-Smith has done what others have fail to do, by providing students, practitioners and professors, an exhaustive, reader-friendly, well documented manual guiding both the theory and praxis of therapy. Moreover, I'm thrilled that the Second Edition of this Text, now includes helpful materials on "Neuroscience and Neuropsychotherapy," making the book even more valuable to current readers.
