Many are not original, but all are worth thinking about, and each requires the solver to think out of his or her box. Dmitry Fuchs, a long-term friend and collaborator of Arnold, provided solutions to some of the problems. Readers are of course invited to select their own favorites and construct their own favorite solutions. In reading these essays, one has the sensation of walking along a path that is found to ascend a mountain peak and then being shown a vista whose existence one could never suspect from the ground. Arnold's style of exposition is unforgiving. The reader--even a professional mathematician--will find paragraphs that require hours of thought to unscramble, and he or she must have patience with the ellipses of thought and the leaps of reason. These are all part of Arnold's intent. In the interest of fostering a greater awareness and appreciation of mathematics and its connections to other disciplines and everyday life, MSRI and the AMS are publishing books in the Mathematical Circles Library series as a service to young people, their parents and teachers, and the mathematics profession. Not as funny as I thought it would be, must have lost something in translation, still it had its moments, I'd just read Hotel Le Big Knob and that was very funny so I was a bit spoilt. I enjoyed it though and found it good to look at a real French Farce.

About the Author
Don Cerow is a certified NCGR Level IV astrologer known for the depth of his celestial insights. A professional since 1972, his interest has been in how astrology evolved from the mythology and astronomy of ancient peoples. He's produced shows for radio and television and has taught at colleges, universities, and planetariums across the country. In 2005 he wrote and produced a multi-media show for Fiske Planetarium at the U of Colorado, Boulder entitled Stars, Myths and Dragons. In "When the Dragon Wore the Crown," Cerow explores the symbolism, mythology, and astronomy of our ancient ancestors. As is my usual habit, I flipped to the back of the book to check out the footnotes and found a beefy footnotes section. The book has a nice set of of charts and should be a great jumping off point for further studies.

While the book is well-written, I couldn't help but feel that the artwork was the best part of the book. "When the Dragon Wore the Crown" is packed with the best collection of pictures that I have seen in a book in the last couple of years.

All in all, the book was a fun and informative read. I really enjoyed reading it and loved the art. This is a book that I would recommend for the art alone. I give "When the Dragon Wore the Crown" four stars out of five and recommend it for your home library.

Thoroughly enjoying working through this book. Lots of info and techniques. Will be using this as a reference for many years. The CD that is enclosed helps to explain some of the less easily understood techniques by giving great examples of what the sounds are that you are trying for.

Outstanding Fingerstyle Ukulele Instruction

Fred Sokolow is a great musician and instructor. This book will take the ukulele strummer into the world of ukulele fingerpicking in a very satisfying way. The material is well graded from beginner to intermediate and advanced. The various styles are clearly presented and illustrated, and the tunes used are quite well known. For those who want to take their ukulele playing to a new level, this book will serve as a very useful tool.

variety of techniques

Melodies are pretty basic, tabs underneath. Progressively harder ie chords for song, basic melody for song, basic melody w chords, rolls interspersed in song. Various options for playing the chords through out a song depending on time signature. ( Not different chord shapes but variations on which strings of that chord you play separately or together, in a pattern, within a bar or two. ) There's a lot in here to try. Not advanced rocket science stuff. I am intermediate self taught. I can play everything in here. It's the introduction of different ways to play the chords/rolls/styles that I liked. I can apply that to other songs I play.
