fun for my 7 year old

my 7 year old is obsessed with superheroes and loves this 3 in 1 book. He can't read it himself yet, but I read it to him and we both enjoy it. I like how, while appropriate for a 7 year old to hear, it has vocabulary fitting for an older child as well. It helps expand my son's understanding and vocabulary while presenting it in a format that he doesn't necessarily see as a learning environment. I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars because the stories in and of themselves are not awesome, but fine. One thing I loved is the pictures. They are very well done and all over the place. Also some words are in different colors and fonts to really make the dialogue pop a bit more. It's a very fun book and well worth the money.

It is SO hard to find good books for boys! My son is in 2nd grade, he is an advanced reader and we really struggle to find books that will engage him and what he likes. These are perfect! Lots of color and an engaging story (if you're 8.) He loves them and we hope they keep coming out with these fun chapter books.

I love it!

I met Frank Schaeffer briefly last summer at a festival I was attending. I didn’t know very much about him at the time, other than he was the son of Francis and Edith Schaeffer. I have since read a few blog posts and heard friends talk about him. I had not read any of Frank’s books until this one. “Why I am an Atheist Who Believes in God” is beautifully written. Frank articulates the struggle between faith, doubt, and belief very well. I found myself drawn into his stories and thinking along the same lines throughout much of this book. I was encouraged by the story Frank shares of Holly and the eulogy her son, Noah, gave. “My mother’s creed was ‘create beauty, give love, find peace.’” And I agree with Frank that “That’s the best description of the point of living I’ve heard.” What I took away from reading “Why I am an Atheist Who Believes in God” is that what we think, know, or believe is of little importance in the art of creating beauty, giving love, and finding peace. In the end, what is important is who we are becoming.
I highly recommend reading this book.
*This is my first review of a book. I'm crossing that off my bucket list!

Don't Expect Too Much

Frank Schaeffer is receiving much praise for his book. He touches a nerve felt my many of us. We believe, but we also find streaks of unbelief in our efforts to process reality. We may feel that our faith community is not a safe place to voice those kind of thoughts. Except from some downsides I will mention shortly, this could be the kind of book that would encourage more openness

His paradoxical, if not misleading title, probably will draw many to this work. However, as another reviewer has noted, Schaeffer is no atheist. He seems to have many agnostic moments. He is quite accepting of atheists, saying “more power to them,” but he offers far too many reasons for some kind of faith in some kind of god to be called an unbeliever. There is no danger of Richard Dawkins asking him to take Christopher Hitchens’ place among “The Four Horsemen of the Non-Apocalypse.”

Frank frequently voices his appreciation for Jesus, but his Jesus is one that is disconnected from Jewish history and the first century Jewish context. That leads to a serious problem. For one who expresses support for so many of Jesus' words found in the gospels, he seems to miss the fact that Jesus’ main message was the coming of the Kingdom of God. Consequently Frank’s Jesus puts much emphasis on love and forgiveness, but does not call Frank or us to submit to him as Lord or to put ourselves under the reign or “kingness” of God.

For all his acknowledgments as to how much he does not know, Frank still does not seem to exalt or call for the quality of humility that Jesus said was so essential for the Kingdom life. Jesus spoke with reference of the written words saying, “the Scriptures cannot be broken” (John 10:35). And another place "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them” (Matthew 5:17). Frank looks at the same canon and says “ [It is] one of the most inconsistent and corrosive books ever compiled.” If Jesus is at least a sage worth listening to and one you build your spiritual life around, is it not arrogant to take words Jesus treated with such respect and treat them as worse than trash?

Frank’s Jesus would have us pursue love and beauty as we define it. The concept of obedience, which is so central to Jesus’ message, seems to Frank to belong to the fundamentalism that he so openly ridicules and despises.

With no confidence in the gospels’ authenticity, Frank selects those statements of Jesus he approves of, much in the style of Thomas Jefferson, yet he seems to go further than the founding father with his stunning revulsion for most of Scripture.

Frank’s honesty will endear him to many readers, particularly those who have suffered under hypocritical and self-righteous leaders. He seems to have an authenticity and realness so often missing among the practitioners of religion. He helps us feel more normal as we struggle with faith and doubt, and offers one way we might learn to live with the latter without giving up the former.

However, as real as doubt is and as stubborn as it can be, genuine faith, especially as taught by Jesus, is more possible, robust and transformational than Frank would lead us to believe. With an attractive candor, he has shared with us his mind and heart. What he did not do was give us a reason to want to leave our nets and go with him or follow Jesus. Perhaps he would say that neither of those was his goal.

So, read Frank’s book and learn from him a good deal of intellectual history. Enjoy his insights that come from his grandchildren--those Narnia-like characters, Jack and Lucy. Gain pleasure from a writer who knows well his craft. Relate to someone who struggles just like you do, but articulates it better. Just don’t expect to catch a clearer view of the Jesus who calls you to find your life by losing it for him and his kingdom.

A Refreshing and Authentic Work of Faith

As a chaplain, in a hospital, I work with people from all walks of life. And what I've learned to do is to "leave space" for the stories that I hear. I try to listen without judgement. But I know that my experience is different from most people. Many people seem to have room for only one way of understanding because they are so busy that they do not want to take the mental energy for "leaving space" because that means taking time to really listen to the story of the other and then taking time to sit with the difficult questions posed by listening. Frank's book has been a refreshing read for me as he states a lot of what I think on a given day. He seems to have lived with the weird, wrestled with it and now has come to a place of allowing space for it all. He seems OK with recognizing that he does not have all of the answers. "You will always embody contradiction he says," and to that I say "Yes!" And maybe what is most endearing to me about the book is the insights that Frank has received from his own grandchildren, "Lucy and Jack just accept that life is weird, wonderful and defined by imagination." He listens to them and allows their stories to help him make sense of this very weird world in which we live. I appreciate Frank's authentic voice and his courage for putting words to paper. I hope to use this book as a book study with others……..a springboard for talking about what is and what might be.

A waste of two lives and an ending

Let me start by saying that I know I'm in the minority here, but I did not care for this novel at all.
Im not going to get into the movie trailer that was recently released, but I must say that a lot of movie goers are going to be deeply disappointed.
I have to applaud Moyes' high-quality writing, the way she seems to effortlessly string words together to tug the reader in whichever direction she pleases is impressive and the beginning of the book seemed promising, akin to the fault in our stars' plot line where the characters' illnesses provide them with a depth and humanity that makes their relationship and interactions intriguing. But it all goes downhill from there.

Lou's character is so precious, her perseverance and love for Will was strikingly beautiful. However, her efforts are all pointless and the message we are left with is that a life with disability is not worth living. This book had the chance to inspire and challenge the reader, to bring them close to the realities of living with physical challenges while proving that life can go on and there is beauty and hope in what others would deem tragic. Will is surrounded by a family that cares for him, he has financial stability, he can still do countless activities despite his condition and most importantly, his life is enhanced by the presence of a character who is willing to give up absolutely everything for the slim chance to change his mind.

I was furious as I read the book's ending. (which was predictable but still undesirable) Lou is willing to give up everything because she learns to see beyond the wheel chair, she can see Will as the man he can no longer see himself as. Will's letter at the end was especially infuriating. He asks her to fulfill her potential and pursue a life she'd missed out on, to live the life she "deserves". He spends his last months telling her that nothing would make him happier than seeing her flourish outside their hometown, yet he is unable to understand that the only life she wants is one with him in it. He urges Lou to expand her horizons and challenge her limits and yet he can't seem to see beyond his wheelchair. It was cowardly of him to give everything up when he had a chance at life with someone who could see him for who we truly was, he is haunted by an image of his old self and fails to realize that Louise is in love with the man he is now, and asks for nothing more than his will to live.
It is NOT a heroic act, it is arrogant to decide when his life should end and the suffering he caused Lou far outweighs any "opportunities" he could have given her with the inheritance.

It seems that only those that are close to or have witnessed the struggle of someone living with physical disabilities see the atrocities being discussed in the novel. That despite all the reminders that his life can still be filled joy and love, he has the right to choose when to end it, regardless of who he hurts in the process. I've read many books that don't end in happy ever after, but there was not point to the depressing, suicidal ending. No reason could have justified his choice but his decision to die is summed up as his inability to cope with the fact that he can no longer live the adventurous life he used to have or behave as the successful, athletic, popular, rich kid he once was.

Will despises the fact that he can not make his own choices, and yet he urges Louisa to go back to school, move on with her life, and witness his death without regard for her only request - his presence. The final scene is selfish and cruel, Lou is left suffering quietly because of her love for him. It goes against everything ethical and moral Lou's family stands for and yet she stands by him as he fails to see the life he could have led with her. Life already has its downsides and challenges, I don't need a novel that celebrates suicide and contemplates that tragedy makes life pointless.

Hmmm...expected more after all the great reviews

I'm not here to debate the decision in this book because I do understand it and think that it isn't fair for anyone to judge a person's decision unless they've been in that same situation. Even then, two individuals can go through the same thing and feel very differently about it (i.e. reading this book).

I didn't like this book as much as everyone else. Here are a list of reasons I cannot wrap my head around...

1. My main gripe with this book is that it's in the "romance" section. Was it about friendship? Yes. A woman finding confidence in herself? Yes. But this was NOT a romance. Will didn't love Lou. He never says it, implies it, or shows it. He just throws a lot of money at her and hopes that makes everything in her life better. The one thing that will make her more complete, he takes away from her. I imagine others are going to say he helped find herself, but he really didn't. He dictated what she should do in her life, instead of asking what she would like to do. Ironic, since what bugged Will so much was that nobody listened to him.

2. Why was there never a chapter from Will's POV? We get chapters from other characters that I couldn't care less about, but we don't get one from the other main character. Strange.

3. Did anyone else find it odd that Will's mother negotiated for 6 months but had no other stipulations? She was a magistrate after all. The way her mind works you think she would've negotiated 6 months, but in addition, Will had to join a support group/go to counseling, go out, whatever it may be. It may not have worked, but I can't fathom she wouldn't have tried that. What's the point of arguing for more time but keeping everything the same. Obviously, you will have the same results.

4. There are so many scenes that are completely pointless. I pushed through the boring scenes (mostly dealing her family, or Patrick) because I thought they would have a purpose, but nope. As a reader, I could've skipped over all those parts (especially with Patrick) and had all the same information. Another example: the California trip. A lot of pages explained Lou researching it and talking about it and then nothing becomes of it (I understand why they didn't go at that exact time) but for it to be such a big part of the book, I expected it to happen at least sometime during the book.

5. I find it unbelievable that Will's family or doctors wouldn't have already provided him with the technology Lou gets for Will. They were wealthy and resourceful, but hadn't thought of this???

This book came highly recommended to me, but overall, I was not impressed. A book doesn't have to have a happy ending for me to be fulfilled, but this book didn't have any romance (I'm not talking about physically but emotionally).

Why live if you can't be perfect?

This was a book club selection and I couldn't bring myself to finish reading it after learning that the male lead goes ahead and kills himself. He had so much life left to live and I find it disgusting to promote the killing of quadriplegics. Aside from parents infantilizing him, he had all he needed to start a heroic new chapter in his life: mental capacity, money for care, family that cared, and beautiful young woman that loved him just as he was. Instead of taking on the challenge to grow, he throws in the towel.

I feel kind of guilty for having purchased this book, as if my money went to slap all the people with physical ailments and physical impairments in the face, telling them they'd never be enough or more than a burden. I am sorry. I do wish I could get my money back so not a penny would go to the author.

Ted Hughes's Birthday Letters--88 tantalizing responses to Sylvia Plath and the furies she left behind--emerge from an echo chamber of art and memory, rage and representation. In the decades following his wife's 1963 suicide, Hughes kept silent, a stance many have seen as guilty, few as dignified. While an industry grew out of Plath's life and art, and even her afterlife, he continued to compose his own dark, unconfessional verses, and edited her Collected Poems, Letters Home: Correspondence 1950-1963, and Journals. But Hughes's conservancy (and his sister Olwyn's power as Plath's executrix) laid him open to yet more blame. Biographers and critics found his cuts to her letters self-interested, and decried his destruction of the journals of her final years--undertaken, he insisted, for the sake of their children.

In Birthday Letters we now have Hughes's response to Plath's white-hot mythologizing. Lost happiness intensifies present pain, but so does old despair: "Your ghost," he acknowledges, "inseparable from my shadow." Ranging from accessible short-story-like verses to tightly wound, allusive lyrics, the poems push forward from initial encounters to key moments long after Plath's death. In "Visit," he writes, "I look up--as if to meet your voice / With all its urgent future / that has burst in on me. Then look back / At the book of the printed words. / You are ten years dead. It is only a story. / Your story. My story." These poems are filled with conditionals and might-have-beens, Hughes never letting us forget forces in motion before their seven-year marriage and final separation. When he first sees Plath, she is both scarred (from her earlier suicide attempt) and radiant: "Your eyes / Squeezed in your face, a crush of diamonds, / Incredibly bright, bright as a crush of tears..." But Fate and Plath's father, Otto, will not let them be. In the very next poem, "The Shot," her trajectory is already plotted. Though Hughes is her victim, her real target is her dead father--"the god with the smoking gun."

Of course, "The Shot" and the accusatory "The Dogs Are Eating Your Mother" are an incitement to those who side (as if there is a side!) with Plath. Newsweek has already chalked up the reaction of poet and feminist Robin Morgan to the book: "My teeth began to grind uncontrollably." But Hughes makes it clear that his poems are written for his dead wife and living children, not her acolytes' bloodsport. He has also, of course, written them for himself and the reader. Pieces such as "Epiphany," "The 59th Bear," and "Life After Death" are masterful mixes of memory and image. In "Epiphany," for instance, the young Hughes, walking in London, suddenly spots a man carrying a fox inside his jacket. Offered the cub for a pound, he hesitates, knowing he and Plath couldn't handle the animal--not with a new baby, not in the city. But in an instant, his potent vision extends beyond the animal, perhaps to his and Plath's children: Already past the kittenish
But the eyes still small,
Round, orphaned-looking, woebegone
As if with weeping. Bereft
Of the blue milk, the toys of feather and fur,
The den life's happy dark. And the huge whisper
Of the constellations
Out of which Mother had always returned. Other poems are more influenced by Plath's "terrible, hypersensitive fingers," including "The Bee God" and "Dreamers," which is apparently a record of Plath's one encounter with Hughes's mistress: "She fascinated you. Her eyes caressed you, / Melted a weeping glitter at you. / Her German the dark undercurrent / In her Kensington jeweller's elocution / Was your ancestral Black Forest whisper--" This exotic woman, "slightly filthy with erotic mystery," seems a close relation to Plath's own Lady Lazarus, and the poem would be equally powerful without any biographical information. This is the one paradoxical pity of this superb collection. These poems require no prior knowledge--but for better or worse, we possess it.

Throughout, Hughes's muscular, controlled free verse, familiar from his previous collections and recent Tales from Ovid, is well suited to the task of wrestling his memory of Plath back to earth, vividly rendering their past while allowing space for a present reckoning. Hughes's occasional snipes at the Plath faithful ("And now your peanut-crunchers can stare/ At the ink stains.../ Where you engraved your letters...") may lead some to accuse him of an elaborate attempt at revisionism, at remaking Plath in his own image. But the strength of the poems simply renders the charge moot, compelling us to accept this masterwork's sincerity, depth of feeling and force of language.

Intimate and Powerful

Readers familiar with the dynamic, forceful romance of Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath will find rich reading in Birthday Letters. This collection of poems about his relationship and marriage to Plath is deeply personal and filled with intimate references to events in the lives of both Hughes and Plath. While the poems are beautiful and well-written in and of themselves, they are illuminated to a new degree with an anecdotal knowledge of the biographies of the authors.

In order to appreciate these poems, I highly recommend reading about the lives of Hughes and Plath before going through Birthday Letters. I read this book in a poetry course in college, and my professor made the poems come alive by educating our class on how Hughes and Plath met, the trauma of losing her father at an early age, her lifelong struggle for mental health, and her unfortunate death. Hughes incorporates all of these in his poems with beautiful symbolism and metaphor. Easily, this is my favorite book of poetry ever.

Two Sides to Every Story

For anyone who has spent much time with Sylvia Plath's work, the power of her own voice overwhelms any sense of objectivity about her subject matter. It's not accidental that she began to insist that the poems were best heard out loud, in her voice, because it is precisely the strength of her highly personal use of language that comes through so forcefully. This has seemingly left little room for debate, and many of those who have written about Plath's work have simply added a kind of cheer of support ("You go, girl!") to that voice. But there are two sides to every story, and Ted Hughes "Birthday Letters" is extremely moving in what it reveals about what it was like to live with a "genius" who also happened to have a history of mental breakdowns. At times, Hughes poems closely reference Plath's, often to very telling effect. For example, Plath's poem "The Rabbit Catcher," which describes her sense of identification with the hunted, and has her pulling up rabbit traps that she finds, protecting the poor bunnies from the evil hunters. Hughes remembers that day differently, watching his wife screaming, as she ripped up the wire traps that provided a little free nourishment to local poor farmers, undoing what to him was generations of history. Until the publication of this book, we've only had Plath's take on the events of her marriage, and these poems provide a much needed sense of how very difficult it must have been living with someone as internally tortured and emotionally volatile as Plath. A few of Hughes' poems are a little bit over the top (especially "The Dogs Are Eating Your Mother"), but the defensiveness is very much in the background. One senses instead how emotionally charred Hughes has been since Plath's suicide, how he has continued to reflect on the details of their relationship, searching for answers to the inevitable question of why that accompanies any self-inflicted death. A good counter-balance to Hughes' poems is the book "The Silent Woman," which outlines the history of how Hughes and his sister Olwyn have handled the Plath estate; you'll better understand why some feminist critics think these poems are too little too late. For the average lover of poetry, however, you'll be grateful for the insights Hughes provides, and you'll also be moved by the beauty of his language. After all, apparently a major part of Plath's attraction to him was that he was such a good poet.

This is my favorite book of Ted Hughes',and tragically, his last. This is the book that opened me to the world of actually reading poetry. I always wrote it, but never before could name a poet that I loved. This guy introduced me to Sylvia Plath, and I am forever grateful how he changed my world.

This is a very good way of learning about Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. It has great screenshots which make it easy to follow. And it has an irreverent style that makes it enjoyable as well as useful. I challenge you not to smile as you read.

Great job Vonnie! I appreciate the chronological discussion of the "real" Windows evolution. The shells that ran on DOS were nothing more than a gussied up "AutoMenu", remember that?

Your explanation of the technological iterations of the various Windows flavors provides a good foundation for a teaching tool. I am a serious proponent of the premise that unless you know where you've been you don't know where you been or are now!

Your detailed discussion of Win 8.1 functions and generous addition of "Tips & Tricks" helps a lot in not having to chase them down in the "heat of battle. Thanks again and "buena fortuna."

This book is an excellent resource for those who are mystified by certain aspects of Windows 8.1 and those who need a handy reference guide. The author uses a clear, conversational writing style to explain the inner workings and specific steps for navigating 8.1 successfully. I also really appreciated that the book addresses security threats, features, and best practices at certain points -- definitely important for any Windows user. Highly recommend this book; would also make a nice Christmas gift!

In the presentation, little is assumed of the reader, and no pains has been spared to make the whole volume understandable to researchers in other fields and to graduate students, provided that the reader is willing to devote sufficient effort required by the subject matter. On the other hand, neither has there been any conscious attempt to avoid essential difficulties, or to trivialise concepts which are intrinsically abstruse. It is thus hoped that the result will be enjoyable reading for researchers and students alike.

A precious little book about a beautiful subject

I love this little guy. Written by two students of the eminent theoretical physicist Chen-Ning Yang, it captures all the essential features of Yang's (and Mills') beautiful idea: the deep and powerful geometrical interpretation of general (classical and quantum) fields derived from the deceptively simple principle of gauge invariance. Although it requires some knowledge of field theory, it doesn' t force the reader to study hundreds of pages of prerequisites to understand the topics treated. It follows a very wise philosophy about the maths of gauge theory, by not slaughtering the reader's mind with lots of differential geometry right at the beginning of the book, although it accomplishes to discuss even some quite esoteric topics, as how Alain Connes' noncommutative geometry may arise in non-conventional field theories (e.g., string theory). Even people already acknowledged with gauge theories may learn one or more things from this book.

About the Author

David W. Quinto is a founding partner and head of internet litigation at Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan LLP in Los Angeles, California. His practice focuses on intellectual property matters, with an emphasis on copyright, trademark, trade secret and Internet-related claims. Mr. Quinto is principally responsible for protecting the rights of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in the OSCAR and ACADEMY AWARDS marks, and Lockheed Martin in the SKUNK WORKS mark. He has also protected intellectual properties owned by Mattel, Avery Dennison, The World Wrestling Federation, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and The America's Cup Organizing Committee.

Stuart H. Singer is a partner in the law firm of Boies, Schiller & Flexner, LLP, resident in the firm's Ft. Lauderdale, Florida office. An invaluable resource for practitioners, jurists, students and any other professionals with a need to understand the law and practice of trade secrets. I'm not sure how they pulled it all together, but it is an impressive piece of work and a must for every library.
