I really liked this book

I give The Principles of Object-Oriented JavaScript by Nicholas C. Zakas a rating of 5 stars. This book deserves no less with its concise nature and very well explained concepts.

First off, I must mention that this book is not intended for beginners. Object Oriented Programming (OOP) takes a different approach in the JavaScript language. In order to fully grasp the content of this book, it is highly recommended that you have a good understanding of OOP concepts and have developed an OOP vocabulary. My suggestion is to first learn a solid OOP language like Java or C++ first before beginning with this book. Just knowing JavaScript alone may not be enough.

I previously mentioned that this book is concise. Weighing in at 92 pages, it's a featherweight in the realm of programming books. You might think it should take more pages to cover such an advanced topic as OOP in JavaScript. But, as exemplified in this book, that is certainly not the case.

The topics in this book are covered just enough to get a good understanding of them. Furthermore, as you progress through the book, what you learn early on will be used again in a later section. So, what you learn in Chapter 1 will be used throughout the rest of the book. Each chapter builds upon the previous one. As you work through the examples, you will get plenty of practice of the things you previously learned.

The author's writing is very easy to read. It's not easy to find a programming book that is so well written. The author does a very good job of not going beyond the scope of the current topic. Furthermore, he sticks to a consistent vocabulary that should be quite familiar with readers familiar to OOP principles.

I can honestly say that this book has improved my understanding of JavaScript. After reading it, I was able to understand why the syntax of JQuery and AngularJS works, instead of just memorizing how to write the code. Those two libraries have some interesting syntax that might look foreign to someone who doesn't understand how JavaScript deals with objects. Because it has been so useful to me, I plan to keep a copy of this book in my personal library.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to gain an understanding of OOP in JavaScript. If you have experience with OOP through another language such as Java and C++, then this book can certainly enrich your JavaScript coding practices. This was my personal experience with The Principles of Object-Oriented JavaScript.

Great intro to Javascript for OO programmers

I needed to learn JavaScript quickly for a project at work, coming from a .NET background. This book was perfect. These days I spend more time with JavaScript than .NET and I'm truly enjoying it. I'm still impressed by how much information Zakas could pack into this scrawny (less than 100 pages) book.

I singled out this book because of the title, and was not disappointed. Javascript can be pretty daunting at the outset (if you come from the strongly-typed world), but once you get the hang of it, it feels quite liberating.

This book definitely helped me understand how OO can be implemented in Javascript. Strongly recommended.

Nice Overview of Key Parts of the JavaScript Language

This is a concise and very helpful book that describes many key aspects of the JavaScript language in clear, easy to understand language.

Two points:

1) Crockford's classic "JavaScript the Good Parts" can help you understand why JavaScript is a tricky language, but I find this book more useful when I simply want to understand how the language works and how it should be used. After reading it, some of the more complex parts of Crockford's book were much easier to understand.

2) There are many fancy things you can do with JavaScript and functional programming that are not covered in this book. But if you are coming from an object oriented language like C# or Java, and you are trying to get a handle on JavaScript, you might well find this book invaluable.

The text is clean and easy to understand, and yet it is not simplistic. This is not a book for someone trying to learn how to program, but instead for good programmers who are trying to understand JavaScript. Zakas has written a number of books on JavaScript, each a bit better than the last. By the time he go to writing this one, he knew more or less exactly what he wanted to say, and how to say it.

True, quality selling!

These textbooks arrived in even better shape than I expected them to. And, since they were eligible for Amazon Prime (Student), they arrived exactly two days after I ordered them. The price of the two volumes combined is something else I appreciated! I am convinced that I couldn't have bought/found this textbook combo anywhere else in this good of condition, pricing, and shipping!

Both textbooks came plastic wrapped together and neither one had a single scratch or marking on them. I was even more relieved to find my unused DavisPlus Plus Code on the inside of the Volume 1 cover. I will be using that so it comforted me to see that I had everything I needed. I also wanted to make a point to those interested in buying, that Volume 1 is hardback and Volume 2 is paperback. Sure, this may seem inconvenient because hardback is always the most durable, but the company itself is who makes it that way.

I basically received two brand new textbooks as I would have if I had bought them from the publisher. Except, I paid much less in item price/shipping than I ever could have gotten away with with the publishing company.

I will say that I am absolutely satisfied with this purchase. And I would recommend it to anyone, but especially to other first year nursing school students who may (or may not) be paying for school and textbooks out of pocket, like I have to (at least this school year). I hope that my review helps someone in making their decision of whether or not to purchase.

VERY DISAPPOINTED

Only received volume 2!!!! I've been looking through reviews and it looks like this has happened to a lot of people, only sometimes they only get volume 1 instead of volume 2!! Come on guys, get your act together! This could already be behind on my first day of nursing school!

Good books, careless packaging

This volume books is a great set. Its one of the main books used in my nursing program for both the LPN and the RN program. I attempted to do my classes with an older volume set and found the information was lacking. I ended up having to barrow my friends books and use their digital log in to get the correct information. Having done 3 months of curriculum based off these books, i can tell you that its got great information and well worth getting. After saving up i finally got this 2 volume bundle i ordered them. The delivery was fast, came on the correct day. I was however disappointed on the packaging. The box was too big for the books, with packing paper or bubbles to keep the books form moving around. These books are heavy, and I know for a fact they got bumped and knocked around in shipping because half the take holding the box closed had broken open from the weight of the books. When i opened the box, part of the plastic wrapping that keeps the bundle new and protected had opened. Volume one had a small but deep dent in the cover. Deep enough to show the cardboard brown under the picture. Volume 2 had a bent cover corner. I know it seems small. But to me, someone who is limited on funds, and have been waiting 3 months to get these books new, i was disappointed at the carelessness. the Pictures i included are taken within 15 min of opening the box to give you an idea of what I'm talking about.

To be clear,the books them selves are a great source of knowledge in nursing and make a great addition to studying the curriculum. My rating is based on the quality and care of the VERY EXPENSIVE set of books.

An intriguing New Interpretation

One of the titles of Jesus that's always puzzled me is "Son of Man." Jarrell's rich and densely argued book traces the title through Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Jewish, and Greek sources, concluding that Jesus, the final "Son of Man," takes up and makes whole the narratives of previous sons of men like Noah, Samson, and Ezekiel. Integral to her account are the roles of Eve the primordial "fallen" woman,the Enochian "daughters of men" and their relations with "fallen angels," and the subsequent renewal symbolized in Mary the mother of Jesus and Mary Magdalene, his companion. In Jarrell's hands, the Son of Man story becomes a cycle of cosmic rebirth and restoration.

The book isn't for the faint-hearted, both because of its startling thesis and the fact that it's heavy reading for people who aren't as comfortable with ancient languages as the author clearly is. But it's well worth the effort.

The author is not a professional scholar, and sadly, it shows. The basic premise of the book is predicated on an assumption (which she never attempts to prove) that the "son of man" language of apocalyptic and Christian literature must be connected to the "daughters of men" from Genesis 6. The book is highly speculative and scarcely structured, and ignores the bulk of current scholarship on the "son of man" and on the fallen-angel myth. While no fault of the author, the numerous typographical errors in the book only contribute to the amateurish feel. The book is too obscure for a general audience, but not up to the standards of academics.

Larry Wasserman is Professor of Statistics at Carnegie Mellon University and a member of the Center for Automated Learning and Discovery in the School of Computer Science. His research areas include nonparametric inference, asymptotic theory, multiple testing, and applications to astrophysics, bioinformatics and genetics. He is the 1999 winner of the Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies Presidents' Award and the 2002 winner of the Centre de recherches math�matiques de Montreal-Statistical Society of Canada Prize in Statistics. He is Associate Editor of The Journal of the American Statistical Association and The Annals of Statistics. He is a fellow of the American Statistical Association and of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics. He is the author of All of Statistics: A Concise Course in Statistical Inference (Springer, 2003).

I don't think it is quite all of nonparametrics but good topics well presented in brief

This is a very nice and concisely written account of the field of nonparametrics. It is very bold for an author to use "all" in the title and I am sure that Wasserman does this with tongue in cheek. He has been even bolder with his other book called "All of Statistics." However, I think that it can safely be said that the essentials are covered along with many interesting topic that are not covered in a traditional nonparametrics text such as Conover's book.

The author's intentions are best expressed in this excerpt from the publisher's description. "The goal of this text is to provide the reader with a single book where they can find a brief account of many, modern topics in nonparametric inference. The book is aimed at Master's level or Ph.D. level students in statistics, computer science, and engineering. It is also suitable for researchers who want to get up to speed quickly on modern nonparametric methods.

This text covers a wide range of topics including: the bootstrap, the nonparametric delta method, nonparametric regression, density estimation, orthogonal function methods, minimax estimation, nonparametric confidence sets, and wavelets. The book has a mixture of methods and theory."

So we see that by "all" the author means a brief description of most topics in nonparametrics. Nonparametric density estimation, bootstrap, nonparametric regression, and wavelets are not covered in traditional nonparametric books and the topics are so involved that each has been treated in books solely dedicated to that topic. I and at least five other authors have written books dedicated to the bootstrap and other resampling methods. Hardle and others have written books on nonparametic regression and Silverman and others have published books on univariate nonparametric density estimation. Scott has done one on multivariate nonparametric density estimation. The topics are impressive and the coverage is good but obviously not thorough. To thoroughly treat all of these topics would take several thousands of pages!

Covers modern material but without code support

I've read about 75% of this book, quitting near the end where the material was of less interest to me. I found this book to be largely focused the theory of nonparametrics with examples. The most important aspect of the book relative to others is that it teaches where each of the methods comes from in a rigorous fashion, i.e. it provides a wonderful base in theory of modern nonparametric methods.

On the other hand, those who want to actually apply the methods will be at a bit of a loss unless they are comfortable with scavenging CRAN for the proper functions/packages for the methods (and are successful at picking good packages). Or if you want to reinvent the wheel, that also works. I was disappointed in the practical aspect of the book in applying the methods. In the book preface, it says "data sets and code may be found at [web address]"... there is data but no code there (as of 8/17/09). At the very least, suggest package/functions in R (or some software)! Just the package/function names would be enough to get running on applying the methods and is certainly not too much to ask.

One other complaint I have with this book is that there is too much time spent on basic concepts while too little on the more complex concepts (as is often the case). The complex material is within reach if I reread it many times, however, more pages spent on these materials with corresponding less on the basics would have been preferable and resulted in a superior text.

For practitioners, I don't think this book will meet expectations. Practitioners open to other methods might instead check out The Elements of Statistical Learning.

That said, I am pleased with this book for its theory (it made me greatly appreciate jackknifing), and I would recommend this book to anyone interested in developing nonparametrics or who wants to understand some intricate nonparametric methods. It is well-written in what I anticipate was its aim: provide a strong theory base for modern nonparametric methods. For those with a milder interest, this book probably won't meet expectations.

Founded in England in the late 1960s, the so-called Committee, otherwise known as the Feather Men, was a vigilante group dedicated to solving crimes that the police could not. This absorbing book details their 14-year struggle to capture the Clinic, a band of contract killers who murdered four former British soldiers. The background was this: Amr bin Issa, sheikh of a tribe in Oman, had lost four sons in his country's civil wars. Although tradition demanded that he avenge their deaths, he did nothing and was deposed as sheikh. Then he arranged with the Clinic to kill the servicemen believed responsible for the deaths of his sons. How the hired killers went about their task (making each murder look like an accident), how they were finally apprehended and how this case in 1990 also put an end to the Committee--or so Fiennes ( Hell on Ice ) contends its members have assured him--makes for a highly suspenseful tale. Readers will be given pause, however, by Fiennes's wont to romanticize vigilante justice and his assertion that for 20 years the British "have had good reason to be grateful for the Feather Men's protective presence." This is the extraordinary story of a group of Englishmen who provide protection and rough justice for former members and their families of the SAS (Special Air Service). The group, known as the Feather Men because of their light touch, learned of a pattern of assassination of former SAS soldiers and attempted to avert further murders. The story is told from the point of view of both the Feather Men and the Clinic, an independent organization of contract killers. The narrative relates the chilling details of each execution, as well as the secret meetings, bloody guerrilla battles, and gradual discovery of the identity and purpose of the Clinic. The action ranges over half the globe, with such diverse landscapes as the mountains of Oman and the Welsh countryside richly evoked. The denouement reveals explorer Fiennes's very personal reasons for agreeing to tell the story and provides a justification for the vigilante activities of the Feather Men. Although at times stretching credulity, this enthralling page-turner will be a good addition to war and true crime collections.

A rousing tale of true adventure in which a homespun band of British vigilantes takes on and destroys a cabal of assassins-for- hire. World-class explorer Fiennes (Living Dangerously, 1988) plays a supporting role in the desperate events he was chosen to recount. At the heart of his stranger-than-fiction story are the Feather Men (so-called for their ``light touch''), a covert organization created to protect veterans of the SAS and other elite military units from reprisals by erstwhile foes. Among other adversaries, the vigilantes took on a band of contract killers known as ``the Clinic.'' In the pay of a Dhofari sheik bent on avenging five sons who had fallen in battle, the hit men stalked and liquidated four former British soldiers, all of whom had fought in Arabia's deserts. The cunning murders, which occurred over a 14-year span beginning in 1977, were carried out in such a way that local police dismissed any possibility of foul play. The Feather Men, however, soon concluded that those they had pledged to safeguard were homicide victims. In the skilled hands of the author--whom the Feather Men picked to tell their story--the facts of how a crew of retired army officers and civil servants working with volunteer operatives managed to track down and eliminate the professional assassins (whose fifth target was Fiennes himself) make for a riveting narrative. Thanks to a generous measure of dramatic license, moreover, the same holds true for the author's vivid reconstruction of episodes on which he was not briefed by principals or participants. Recently read . . . for the 2nd time

This was a really good book and though I liked the movie, it would have had to have been a miniseries to colapse and condence the time and amount of content that the book offers. I found the book hard to put down. I did not want to stop reading it even when 1 AM rolled round and I had to be up for work by 5 AM.
You get a lot more character complexity in the book than the movie, you understand why the Sheik had conducted his revenge, Danny the assassin is not who you think he is, under the surface, the layers of his personality show through, Spike the Ex- SAS man tough as nails, God Save the Queen, sacrificing ALL for his beleif in counrty and Duty even after forced retirment(a quality many SAS men exude)
Ran Fiennes, is Ex-SAS and knows his stuff. there is even a nod to "Lofty" John Wiseman in the book (a 26 or 28 year veteran of the SAS and author of "The SAS survival handbook.) Do yourself a favor and read this book, a really Spy Vs. Spy, special ops, James Bondish, Queen and Country, book. Did I mention it is based in fact? I know, I know, based in fact is subject to conjecture but the events described in his book you can look up for yourself, because Ran Fiennes was there and was part of the operation that got the ball rolling with the assassins in the first place.

So in any event I thought it was a great book and I highly recomned it.

Good book but the film is far better.

This was an enjoyable read but because the thread of the story kept jumping from one character to another you had to keep in mind who they were working for. To me this made the reading staccato like which is not my preference. The story was goo but the movie was far better. If it was a choice between getting the DVD or purchasing the book you can guess my suggestion. The only caveat is that the film has a different ending from the book so you have been warned.

Best spy book ever.

I came across this book while stuck in the hospital for an unexpectedly long visit. I was mesmerized. I am not usually a big fan of the spy genre but this book captured my attention and held it throughout the entire book. Such a story that I will not forget for a long time and one where there are not clear cut good and bad guys. Just an excellent book. Give it a read!
