Clear, Simple, Joyous

"A Thousand Names for Joy" is my favorite of Byron Katie's books. This may be due to my own peculiar predilections -- I am more drawn to prose than to dialogue, and I have long been a fan of Stephen Mitchell's inspired translation of the Tao Te Ching.

Katie's commentary beautifully captures the spirit of Lao Tsu's great work. I suggest that you keep a copy of the Tao te Ching handy as a reference. Passages that seem unclear to you may become clearer when you follow along with the Tao.

Some reviewers have called "A Thousand Names for Joy" controversial. I hear that -- it's heady stuff. But I believe "A Thousand Names" deserves a relatively sympathetic read. Don't be fooled by the glossy cover -- "A Thousand Names" deals with a very challenging topic. A little less than 2,000 years ago, the philosopher Epictetus said "we are not troubled by things, but by the view we take of things." Humanity has been struggling with this insightful, helpful, and controversial idea ever since. Katie's philosophy is right in line with Epictetus, and with modern cognitive approaches to therapy and self-help, including CBT, ACT, and REBT. No matter what the disaster, Katie will not agree that it is "horrible" and "awful." She believes that "horrible" and "awful" are words we use to trouble ourselves.

Katie states repeatedly in "A Thousand Names" that "everything is God, and God is good." In her zeal to joyously accept all things, some may legitimately wonder if she has left geuine concern for real human suffering behind. This is an important consideration! However, recent studies have shown that the happiest people are indeed the most compassionate people -- and that the rest of us also tend to do more for others when we are in a very good mood. Happiness and compassion are highly interrelated qualities, it turns out. Happy people tend to look for opportunities to help and be in solidarity with others during difficult times. People who are highly distressed by the sight of others' suffering tend to avoid suffering people.

Difficult situations -- like pots in a campfire -- can only be grasped by the coolest handle. Katie is a naturally gifted counselor who does not force a particular belief system upon us. Rather, she helps us find beliefs that will help us grasp the difficult situations in our lives in powerful and loving ways.

Reading "A Thousand Names" always puts me in a good mood, because Katie beautifully models an approach to life that is full of humor, compassion, and self-acceptance. Byron Katie proposes "the Work" as a method to help the rest of us taste this freedom. "A Thousand Names for Joy" helps us reflect more deeply on some of the turn-arounds we encounter while doing the Work. I recommend "A Thousand Names for Joy" highly for readers whose spiritual lives call you toward devotional reading and contemplation.

Living Beyond Pain

This book has become my Bible. I read it daily, and each time I receive something new and different in terms of a message. No matter what issue I am dealing with, the answer seems to exist within the pages of this book. I am reaching a place of total surrender in every area of my life, and the result is a pain-free, peaceful existence. Real living is about moving beyond pain (of any kind) and embracing the joy that abounds. Katie has shared a way to do that. Like any other spiritual path, there will be arguments to support why this path doesn't work. The truth is, it's all rooted in your beliefs. Change your beliefs/thoughts, change your life. Relinquish control and allow Life/God/Spirit to be your guide. My daily mantra has become this: "Life is simple. Everything happens FOR you, not TO you. Everything happens at exactly the right moment, neither too soon nor too late. You don't have to like it--it's just easier if you do. If you have a problem, it can only be because of your unquestioned thinking." Amen to that!

A Thousand Raves for This Book

We tend to think of Great Spiritual Leaders in the past tense. They are almost always Male. Image-wise, they are usually bearded men who lived long ago in some far away place and said some very wise things, especially when they were about to die.

We are so very fortunate -- those of us who are alive in this moment, those of us who are reading these words -- because in OUR lifetime and from OUR culture comes a wise person who has a simple formula which, when followed, guarantees the end of suffering! Her name is Byron Katie and as far as I can tell, she has no ego. It disappeared one day in 1986, leaving behind only clear vision and a love of Reality.

I was given Katie's first book, LOVING WHAT IS, in the summer of 2004 when I was deep in depression, blinded with emotional pain. Since that time, by doing The Work, I have opened myself to a joyous, fantastically exciting life. I have read just about everything Katie has written, and also attended The School for the Work, several Intensives, and more.

Reading A THOUSAND NAMES FOR JOY is like sitting at the feet of the Master herself. And surprise! She is not an old man from an ancient civilization; she is US...but without the pain created from attachment to stressful thoughts.

Here is a NEW bible for a new generation of inner peace-seekers! It's brilliant. It is proof that Enlightenment (which I'll define as simply finding God in everything) can come to anyone at any time.

It helped me under stand the Catholic position.

Upon This Rock was a well written and thought out book. It gave all the sources that he used and helped me to understand the depth of the Catholic position. I do not agree with Mr. Ray's conclusion but now I realize I may well be wrong. I think one goal of this book was to defend the Catholic Church and show why the church claims the authority it does. I have to admit many of my presuppositions have been changed and his work has helped me understand and even respect the faith of Catholics that much more.

Awestruck...

After reading opinions by James White and William Webster on the same subject, I thought I'd been given the full truth. But Mr. Ray's further, deeper development on White's/Webster's study showed me that I had only been given an incomplete story. What else about the Protestant faith is only "partially" developed ? Mr. Ray's presentation is overwhelming. One particular nugget in the goldmine of truth was not detailed in the New Testament, Old Testament, or the Church Fathers. It was a geography lesson on Caesarea Philllipi. It had never dawned on me what a long journey this was for Jesus and his disciples. The significance of the journey and the rock have come into focus!

I am now dedicating myself to learning what other partial truths have been developed fully by the catholic church.

Great Book

The discussion was excellent in that it chronicled the Office of the Papacy both in Scripture and in history. It is an excellent source book and demonstrated excellent research techniques especially in the Early Church Fathers documentation and reference. There are a great deal of footnotes, but unlike some books, these footnotes are very readable and useable either in a discussion as a Catholic Christian Apologist or as a bibliography in a paper. I highly recommend this book.
