Man-machine interaction is the gateway providing access to functions and services, which, due to the ever increasing complexity of smart systems, threatens to�become a bottleneck. This book therefore introduces not only advanced interfacing concepts, but also gives insight into the related theoretical background.This refers mainly to the realization of video-based multimodal interaction via gesture, mimics, and speech, but also to interacting with virtual object in virtual environments, cooperating with local or remote robots, and user assistance.

While most publications in the field of human factors engineering focus on interface design, this book puts special emphasis on implementation aspects. To this end it is accompanied by software development environments for image processing, classification, and virtual environment implementation. In addition a test data base is included for gestures, head pose, facial expressions, full-body person recognition, and people tracking. These data are used for the examples throughout the book, but are also meant to encourage the reader to start experimentation on his own.

Thus the book may serve as a self-contained introduction both for researchers and developers of man-machine interfaces. It may also be used for graduate-level university courses.

Conceptually complete, but in only rough draft form at the time of Kilmartin's death, it has been edited and prepared for publication by Robert J. Daly, S.J.Chapter one describes the characteristics of the eucharistic theology of the Western Latin Fathers. Chapter two identifies the more important orientations and developments of the Catholic tradition from early medieval Scholasticism up to the first part of the twelfth century. Chapter three singles out the special contribution of early Scholasticism to Latin eucharistic theology Chapter four functions as a bridge from early Scholasticism to high Scholasticism by outlining the general approach to a synthetic theology of the Eucharist which was obtained at the beginning ofthe thirteenth century. Chapter five treats eucharistic theology from high Scholasticism to the Council of Trent. Chapter six summarizes the dogmatic teaching of the Council of Trent. This is followed in Chapter seven, by a treatment of salient features of post-Tridentine eucharistic theology. Chapter eight includes an analysis of the practice and theology of Mass stipends. Chapter nine includes a detailed analysis of Aquinas's theology of the eucharistic sacrifice. I'll slide this one up to four stars. . .

. . .due to the circumstances under which it was written. Fr. Edward J. Kilmartin, SJ died before this, his magnum opus was complete. His notes were left on his computer, and one of his students provided the final editing and publishing work.
This results in a text which is extremely detailed in places, and extremely sketchy in others, apparently where Fr. Kilmartin was unable to "flesh out" the material. Some chapters were complete -- some were more outlines.
Nevertheless, this book is a wonderful discussion of both the history and the theology of the Eucharist throughout the course of Western Christian history. The medieval Eucharistic controversies are covered in detail, as are the issues surrounding the Eucharistic questions at the time of the Reformation and the Council of Trent.
Kilmartin is noteworthy here for his insistance that the task of the Church in the Third Millenium is to provide a theology of the Eucharist which is theologically sound, biblical, historic, and at the same time meaningful and relevant.
While not necessarily agreeing with every point and emphasis, nevertheless, I highly recommend this book. It represents a clarion call to authentic thought scholarship -- and to the translation of such thought scholarship to the level of the man in the pew.

Great for Academic Study

I was a member of Dr. Daly's class at Boston College which first went through the pre-publication version of this manuscript. I found Kilmartin's work to be a valuable academic help to my work on a Master's Thesis on the Lord's Supper.

If you're doing research in the area of the Eucharist -- find this book if you can. Especially if you're looking into recent Roman Catholic trends in eucharistic thought.

About the Author

A precursor of the 20th century's feminist authors, Kate Chopin (1850–1904) wrote short stories and novels for children and adults. The St. Louis native lived in New Orleans for a dozen years and set most of her tales amid Louisiana's Creole culture. Many of her stories were well ahead of their time, and she achieved widespread acclaim only after her death.

Creol blues

I came on this book by chance, having never heard or Kate Chopin or her more famous book "The Awakening." This slim volume of short stories is my only experience with her still.
The easy pace of the stories, the charming lilt and rhythm of the dialogs, gives a good impression of bayou life, something that I am not very familiar with. Pace is something in common with all of the selections, with none of the characters getting very excited or overwrought, even in the midst of a fight or falling in love. "The Big Easy," they call it, and I believe it from these tales. They are small, psychological portraits, well written and engaging.
"Desirees Baby" was an almost Lovecraftian psychological horror tale, of hidden ancestries creeping unwanted across generations. "The Dream of an Hour" is in a similar vein, with a twist ending. Most of the stories are gentle, understated love stories both romantic ("A Night in Acadie") sad ("At the Cadian Ball," "Azelie,"), forbidden ("A Respectable Woman") and funny ("Madame Celestins Divorce.") I must admit to being charmed by each love story, and hoped the best for everyone involved. "A Pair of Silk Stockings" and "A Gentleman of the Bayou Teche" are both brief glimpses into a small world, and equally good.
I am glad to be introduced to Kate Chopin, and look forward to seeking out "The Awakening."

A Bargain

The first story alone was worth the [money] I paid for this book. It was a sad, gentle social commentary (or maybe not so gentle) that seems very much like the work of someone who would raise so much public outcry (for "The Awakening") that she would never be published again. One or two of the stories struck me as being bitter, but the others were up to her current day reputation. Many of the stories hinge on careful character studies of Acadians, the Acadians being descendants of French families relocated to the United States when Canada become unarguably British. The French dialect used in some of the stories only made the collection richer, in my mind. It would have seemed false to have these people speaking proper English. On reading the other reviews, I tend to agree that it might be a good idea to skip this book and buy Bayou Folk or another more thorough collection. If you know you love Kate Chopin's writing, do that. Otherwise, this collection is a good introduction although it can't beat "The Awakening."

Of course I love all of Kate Chopin's work, but this collection overlaps with both Bayou Folk and A Night in Acadie (which one can purchase from Penguin Classics in a complete volume). The only real treasure in this book is a story that may be tricky to find: The Dream of an Hour. The title story is no great shakes. I would recommend buying her more comprehensive collections of stories and using this booklet (9 stories) as a filler for a few missing works. At 80 cents, who can loose?
