About the Author
Jonathan I. Lunine is the David C. Duncan Professor in the Physical Sciences at Cornell University. His research interests center broadly on planetary origin and evolution, in our solar system and around other stars. He works as an interdisciplinary scientist on the Cassini mission to Saturn and on the James Webb Space Telescope, and is also a co-investigator on the Juno mission which launched for Jupiter in August 2011. Dr Lunine is the author of over 230 scientific papers and besides the first edition of this book (Cambridge University Press, 1999), he has also written Astrobiology: A Multidisciplinary Approach (Pearson Addison-Wesley, 2005). He is a member of the US National Academy of Sciences and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Geophysical Union.

Dr. Lunine is a Professor of Planetary Sciences at the University of Arizona, and a NASA advisor. His new book describes Earth's evolution in a fresh perspective, in relation to its sister planets, particularly Mars and Venus. This 319 page textbook covers Earth's origin, the development of its atmosphere and oceans, the variations of its orbit and climate, and at what point we are enmeshed in its long and lively history. The reader can see how we can be unwittingly in the teeth of an ice age and why the number of species has crescendoed now, in our time.
The vast territory that Lunine succinctly covers is all that anyone with a bit of gumption needs to become an authority on the state of our planet. Guideposts to this territory include the sciences of measurement (basically, math, the metric system, and dating methods), and of physics as applied to geology and biology (and some chemistry). Unfortunately Lunine sometimes lapses into off-topic diversions of astronomy (Doppler shifts, lunar phases, Stonehenge, eclipses, and aging planets by the density of their craters). Also, there is no glossary, but the index is adequate. (A few undefined jargons, like "cratonization", sneak in.)
The book is profusely illustrated by Jonathan's wife, Cynthia. There is a color section, mostly of refugees of some astronomy book showing various wonders of the universe. But one color map of the Southwest occupied my attention for a long time. It compares vegetation regimes during the Pleistocene and the Present, the ancient record being derived from pollen counts meticulously gleaned from old packrat middens. I amused myself by examining these data to see whether elephants could be reintroduced into Arizona. Another color figure shows fantastic computer sequences on how the moon must have been formed by an impact between Earth and a Mars-sized billiard ball.
The description of the origin of life is a gem. Lunine's compelling prose springs out as lively as the quasi-stable whirlpools of life he describes (basically an autocatalysis model describing a mode of life existing before reproduction). An alternative model depicting an RNA origin of life is provided mainly for comic relief. Although the role of biology in forming Earth's almost explosive atmosphere covers several subsequent chapters, life is depicted as along for the ride, and the Gaia "biofeedback" theory is dismissed in a sentence.
Unfortunately, the origin of sentience, an event indisputably more profound than the origin of life, is not mentioned. However, the fossil evolution rise of humanity, particularly the Neanderthals, is wonderfully covered. Lunine mentions the "blitzkrieg" theory of his neighbor, Dr. Paul Martin, who postulates the extinction of American megafauna, such as the great elephants and saber-tooths, as being the result of the invasion of "native" Americans with spears. A nice contrast to the increase in American bio-diversity that accompanied the post-Columbian invasion of technologically advanced humans.
Lunine was identified by Time magazine as one of its 1994 "50 for the Future" list of emerging American leaders. Lunine himself would prefer the term "policy-maker" to leader, in the sense of presenting knowledge that self-led individuals can organize into principles of purposeful and long range action. The power of a comprehensive book such as this is that current issues such as global warming can be put in the perspective of past "atmosphere crises" of Earth, such as the super-high greenhouse prevailing at the end of the dinosaur era.
The penultimate chapter, titled "Limited Resources" fails this potential, being anecdotal without the factual rigor of the preceding chapters. (I was told that this chapter was written at the last minute at the request of the publisher.) Lunine starts by treating limited resources and overpopulation as arbitrary assertions, in defiance of his tradition of listing the assumptions of every dating method or limitations of climate modeling.
On the plus side, Lunine does take a rational stand against the Luddites. But where are the charts on air pollution, famine frequencies, human fertility, wetland or forest land acreage, etc. over time? The charts that do appear, on projections of population, energy use, kilos of grain per person, and "undiscovered" oil, have none of the error bars, validation, or context of previous chapters. Bemoaning the tiny amount of land urbanized each year to support farmers moving to the cities as a result of a world-wide food glut is an example of the surreal non-sequitor grab-bag of alarmist insinuations of which fill this chapter.
Particularly nasty is the bromide that less industrialized nations need a "reasonable" standard of living, with the implication that the U.S., (which creates most of the resources that feed and run the world), somehow deprives them of this even as the U.S. demonstrates the technological and political blueprints on how to achieve abundance. Since humans are too greedy or stupid to be allowed the freedom to despoil their own nest, only coercive regulation, or supra-governmental "cooperation" is required to tell their citizenry what is in their own best interests at gun-point. The nadir of these politics is an inexcusable sanction of coercive sterilization in China.
Other than the coverage of our most recent millennium, Lunine has written a tightly integrated and ambitious book. Particularly evocative is the imagery of the continents, floating and jostled into each other like froth on the churning oceanic plates of the Earth, teeming with a surprisingly robust and assertive biological component, laughing yet seesawing through cosmic disasters, extinctions, and self-induced crises of a scale that reduces the palimpsest of human intervention to ripples from a plunked stone.
This beautiful and vigorous accomplishment surmounts what has heretofore been a dry subject, and it literally groundbreaks the placement of our planet and ourselves in the objective context of existence and history.

perfect book for reference

If you're looking for a book that is a great read and even a better reference book about the geosciences, this is the one. I refer to it often in my scientific education. The references at the end of each chapter are also a great way for people to get further information on each subject, if they need it.

Very informative

I used the book for a book report in teaching. It nicely complemented the topics covered in the syllabus. Occasionally narrative becomes boring with emphasis on astrophysics. Nonetheless, the content clearly reflects the author's deeper understanding of the topics in a unifying scheme.

About the Author
Nicolaus Balla and Cortney Burns are the co-chefs and couple behind the beloved San Francisco Mission District eatery Bar Tartine (sister restaurant to Tartine Bakery). They are fiercely loyal to using local produce and to making anything and everything by hand. Nick was born in Michigan but spent some of his childhood in New York, moved to Hungary for part of high school, went to culinary school, and then traveled extensively in Japan while learning to make hand-crafted ingredients. Cortney grew up in Chicago, spending time in Nepal and India studying the Tibetan language and cultural anthropology. She worked for years cooking in restaurants, spending her free time learning the preservation techniques of past generations from old cookbooks, memoirs, and family histories. They both ended up in San Francisco, drawn by the talent of the chefs and farmers in the Bay Area. Their cooking is a product of the foods they grew up eating with their families in the Midwest and that they have experienced during their travels abroad. Bar Tartine has been featured in Men's Health, USA Today, InStyle, Bon Appétit, Travel + Leisure, Wired, and Food & Wine among other top local and national outlets.

Read for a cooking fantasy, not for a cookbook

Reading this book, for me, is akin to a middle-aged, every-other-weekend hiker with an aching knee reading a book about how to climb Mt. Everest. That hiker may really, really enjoy reading that book. And her hiking experiences may allow her to greatly appreciate all of the work that goes into climbing Mt. Everest, but the truth is, she will never, ever climb that mountain!

Bar Tartine is a lovely book. The photographs are stunning. The recipes are creative and complex. I might, someday, try one of them.

I will not be making any of these recipes anytime soon for a few reasons. As I'm sure the other reviews have mentioned again and again, each recipe calls for one or more ingredients that one must prepare using the techniques section that comprises the first half of the book. These ingredients are brined, pickled, smoked, dried, powdered, smoked, burnt, smoked then powdered...etc. I just do not have enough refrigerator space to devote to 10+ vats of various foods, in various stages of being transformed from simple to delicious. I live in Europe, and the fridges here tend to be small (note to any Europeans reading this, none of the things in this book will fit in your fridge, but if you are a native European, you may be braver than I when it comes to not refrigerating things). Also, only one person that I know in my town owns a gas oven, and it is the kind without a pilot light, so all of those dried food recipes are out.

The other thing is, for all of the time spent on techniques, there is very little information about how to use the resulting pickles and powders and sauces, other than in other equally daunting recipes at the end of the book. I might be persuaded to cook heads of garlic at 130F in my rice cooker for 3 WEEKS if there was a list of more than three ways in which I could actually use black garlic.

All of that said, I will never climb Mt. Everest, but I do occasionally enjoy reading books about this feat. Hence, 4 stars for an interesting and engaging book about cooking techniques that I will likely never use.

Inspiring, Uncompromising Cookbook

The philosophy behind this book is immediately apparent: the first 150 pages contain recipes for ingredients, not dishes. But what ingredients! Goat cheese, pork fat chile oil, rice vinegar, Brussels kraut, fig leaf syrup, mushroom broth, karasumi/bottarga(!) An entire other category is powders - onion, garlic, yoghurt, rice koji, kale, parsnip, sauerkraut - that are bright and fresh and perfect for inventive sous vide recipes. One warning though: the recipe for black garlic (put garlic heads in a slow cooker set on Warm, for two weeks) mentions the intense smell: I confirm that it can go through walls.

But back to that mushroom broth: it is ordinarily made with water and a few mushrooms, and is invariably insipid; this recipe cooks LOTS of fresh mushrooms at low temperature for hours then extracts all the liquid from them, is all. The recipe made so much sense that it was the first thing I made. It's easily the best mushroom broth in the world, but these guys also include a recipe to further reduce it to an emulsion, good grief.

The recipes for dishes, when they finally start, are very inventive and just as uncompromising. Cabbage rolls with fish cake starts with the recipe for making fish cake. The result is probably not that different from wrapping store-bought fish cake with cabbage (a pairing made in Heaven), but hey: now I can invent new fish cakes laced with (say) white anchovies, katsuobushi, or even that bottarga. Slow-roasted carrots with burnt bread and almond milk sounds bizarre, but after reading the recipe it sounds compelling.

Only after the first read-thru did I realize that - never mind the heavy use of Asian ingredients - the heart of this cookbook beats in Hungary. It uses no exotic, overpriced ingredients, and the recipes, while long and complicated, are not in themselves difficult. This is SLOW food, in the best sense of the word: some of the recipes would take months to make if you had to start from scratch. Right now is prime Brussels sprout season, so grab the book now, get the Brussels kraut started, and by next summer you'll be ready to cook with it. The authors spent years learning and developing their techniques, and are graciously sharing them with us here.

I wouldn't recommend it to everyone

I've had this inspiring, creative food-making guide for about 6 months now and it has yet to be returned to my cookbook shelves. It's probably the most original cookbook I've ever read and it has become essential in my kitchen. Yet, I wouldn't recommend it to everyone. This is definitely not a beginner's book nor a "what's for dinner tonight" recipe collection. This is a guide to building a pantry of do-it-yourself food additives that will punch flavor into your food. The actual recipes, which are only about half of the book, serve as inspiration for using some of those ingredients you've charred, dehydrated, sprouted, fermented and cultured in the first half of the guide.

Of course, homemade garlic powder may at first blush seem a "you've got to be kidding me" directive if you're starting one of the recipes in the second half of the book and see it listed in the ingredients. Well, if you just want to make that particular recipe, you don't have to make the garlic powder; you can easily substitute store-bought. But if it's garlic season and you saw a great deal at the farmer's market and maybe you bought more than you can really use, why not dehydrate some and make powder for future use? I'm slowly adding things to my pantry as I have time and abundance of raw materials.

Another reason I wouldn't recommend this book to a beginning cook is that blindly following the recipes may not always yield the best result. Recipes that include a sauce, for example, often yield excessive amounts of sauce. This is a common occurrence in cookbooks from restaurants, probably because the chefs are accustomed to preparing large quantities of sauces for use in multiple dishes. Experienced cooks shouldn't have much trouble estimating the sauce volume and either making a fraction of it or saving the excess for another use.

So bottom line, if you're just starting to cook or don't want to spend much time in the kitchen, hold of on this book until one or both of those conditions change. But, say, if you mastered Sally Fallon's Nourishing Traditions years ago and want to be even more intense in the kitchen and truly wow your dinner guests, you will love this book. I sure do.

About the Author
Robert A. Baron is the Dean R. Wellington Professor of Management and Professor of Psychology; Ph.D., University of Iowa. He recently completed terms of office as Interim Dean and Interim Director of the Severino Center for Technological Entrepreneurship (2001-2002). Prof. Baron has held faculty appointments at Purdue University, the University of Minnesota, University of Texas, University of South Carolina, University of Washington, and Princeton University. In 1982 he was a Visiting Fellow at Oxford University. He is the author or co-author of more than forty books in the fields of management and psychology, including Behavior in Organizations (8th ed.), Social Psychology (10th ed.).

Scott A. Shane is Professor of Economics and Entrepreneurship at the Weatherhead School of Management at the Case Western Reserve University and Academic Director of the Center for Regional Economic Issues; PhD, University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Shane has held faculty appointments at University of Maryland, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Georgia Institute of Technology. The author of over 50 scholarly articles on entrepreneurship and innovation management, Dr. Shane's work has appeared in Management Science, Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Strategic Management Journal, Decision Science, Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, Journal of Management, Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of International Business Studies, and Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, among other journals. Perfect Ending!

I was truly humbled when I was given an ARC of this book. I could not put it down. Thank you so much Liz Crowe for this great honor. What to say about this amazing completion to a series that has blown me away. I can only say that this book was phenomenal. If you have never experienced a Liz Crowe book then as a reader you are missing out. Although we get the continuing story about Jack Gordon and the Stewart Realty family this book is definitely not a romance. This is ultimately the story of addiction and the trials and tribulations of a family's ability to cope. This is a hard core look into tough love. It is a powerful ride that will have you laughing, cussing, loving, and crying.

This is the story of Brandis Gordon, son of Jack Gordon, and his addiction. Brandis has everything in life the looks, wealth, popularity and an addiction. His addiction causes turmoil with his entire family. His parents are at odds over how to help. His addiction has affected everyone who has touched his life. At what price will he have to pay before he can overcome this powerful demon? So I know your asking what about Jack and Sara and the Stewart Realty gang. This book is totally about them. It is about them as parents and raising their children. We get plenty of that steamy chemistry of Jack and Sara. In the end it is about their legacies becoming adults and life coming full circle.

As a fanatic Liz Crowe fan, I expected to feel every emotion that these characters face and she did not disappoint. Liz's ability to make me feel as if I'm living the story is amazing. She has put together a very real look into what many family's with loved ones,as addicts go through everyday. Some of the scenes in this story were so spot on as to what happens it made me feel like I was reliving some of my own memories. I loved that Liz managed to incorporate every single character that she has ever written in the Stewart series into this book. I went back and couldn't find not a single person that she left out. This book will floor you at times but isn't that why most of us read. I can honestly say that I now have a new favorite book in the series. For me this book, was the perfect conclusion to some amazing characters.

Good Faith is a journey from beginning to end. It's the story of three families and the choices that everyone makes. It's not a romance but a contemporary/literary fiction. The characters are flawed and human with needs, desires, and weaknesses. Those shortcomings stare you in the face and make you contemplate your own life. Each character is a combination of good choices and bad choices. It's how they choose to live their lives in spite of all their mistakes that makes this story powerful.

Liz Crowe has written a story I could relate to on a gut level and submerse myself into. The emotional journeys which each person takes deeply resonated with me. I didn't want to stop reading or put the book down. Even a few days after reading it, I'm still thinking about it and pondering the story's complexities. There's so much to absorb as characters come full circle and life alters each and every one of them.

As a parent of four young adults, I could identify most with the adult characters, Jack, Sara, Rob, Lila, Craig, and Suzanne. They were me at one time in my life. Also I could relate to the challenges of parenting the teenage years that they faced. We hope as parents that our children won't make the same mistakes we did, even if we tell them not to, but sometimes our children have to learn it on their own. Other people really connect with the younger generation and their struggles. I love that no two people have the same experience with this book. Each reader has their own encounter and comes away with different opinions and feelings.

Fans of the Stewart Realty series will certainly want to read this book as it completes the series but you don't have to have read any of the other stories to love this book. Good Faith is a stand-alone novel that will delight fans of Alice Munro's life complexities stories.

Expect the Unexpected!

I have previously read and loved Liz Crowe's Stewart Realty series, I think that's due to my fascination with Jack Gordon and Sara Thornton. The chase, the rejection, the dance and most of all-the explosive chemistry sustained me through the longest journey I think I have encountered in a love story. They now have three kids; Katie, Brandis and Bethany. Good Faith is centered around Brandis Gordon.

When the story first begins, Katie is studying for med school, Brandis is the ultimate bad boy getting into just about everything and every girl he can. He is gorgeous, athletically gifted and savvy. Bethany is a few years younger and hasn't kicked up too much dust to this point.

There is a great deal of intermixing from the life long friendships developed in this series. Rob and Lila Freitag have two children, Gabe and Blair. Evan and Julie Adams have twin girls June and Claire. Suzanne and Craig Robinson have Lillian Grace, and Maureen and Rafe Inez have their son little Blake, her older children are married with families of their own. Of course we can see some pairing with this clan. Blair has been in love with Brandis probably since birth and Gabe and Lilian have some similar feelings developing.

As the year progress, there are many changes. Brandis in spite of his manwhore ways, has deep feelings for Blair. Unfortunately, he has an equal love for alcohol, sex and drugs. His years of extra coaching for football pay off and he gets a scholarship to the University of Michigan as the starting quarterback. He is lonely, misses Gabe, who decided to go to a different college and Blair who helped him stay centered from his demons. As hard as he tries, the demons win.

"I'm not blind. I just choose to believe him when he tells me he's clean. You might consider that too. It would go a long way toward him trusting you. Jesus, you'd think you were gonna make him pee in a cup every day just to prove it."

Brandis breaks Blair's heart and spirit many times over. Sometimes when you have everything you really have nothing that counts. Brandis is in over his head and spirals out of control. To witness the dysfunction in the Gordon house is painful. This family has never been the Cleavers but this is a whole new level even for them. Despite their every effort, Brandis is in a deep, dark place and his problem has devastating ramifications for those who love him most.

The sound of his wife's name, caressed slowly by the voice of another man made Jack's teeth ache. He shut his eyes, took his hand off the door and started to back away. He deserved this.

There is a level of depth to this novel, that I have seen previously in Essence of Time. Crowe is never afraid to "go there"- to do the things other authors would never do to characters. These sacred cows that readers have come to know and love are not off limits to her. There are infidelities, and betrayals and indiscretions. Some of which totally shocked me, somehow as a reader I became too comfortable with these characters, assuming they would avoid temptations that mere mortals wouldn't.

"Why are you so angry?" Rob asked, his voice soft. "I'm not angry. I just hate you."

About 65% in, my heart cracked wide open and started hemorrhaging. I found myself sobbing out loud and telling myself this could not be happening. But it did, and in spite of that I kept reading. Watching this latest generation of characters, fall and stumble and stand again brings this series full circle. Brandis is 30 at the end of this story and he and his siblings and his friends are scarred and wiser and so much more likable than at the outset of their journey.

Crowe has done a magnificent job with this book. She gutted me, but somehow the pieces of the puzzle all fit and life continues and goes on. I am a weary traveler on that journey, it was bittersweet, but I am the better for having taken the road less travelled.

Thought provoking

It's a sad commentary that such circumstances still exist in this day & age among groups - ie Northern European & offshoots - that have convinced us that women have an equal place in society. It's a sadder commentary that women believe this disinformation spread by the powers that be. This book rips the cover off and exposes the true, ugly underside of reality. It is time we all stop deluding ourselves.

Passable but on the dirty side.

The cover art is different from how it is pictured, which disappoints. Moreover, it is dirty and I had to wipe it down with a few napkins. Needless to say, they came away grey. Also, the pages look very worn. it has been used but more than once! I know because the warehouse did not even bother to get rid of the library catalogue stuck on the first page. So buy this product if one is trying to save, however know that there are better and cleaner used editions out there.

I have had this book for a long time (since before Amazon existed) and keep referring back to it. I also pass on information about the book to anyone who comments on the unfairness of the so-called justice meated out to women. I believe Eve Was Framed is a book dealing with jurisprudence that even the lay person can undertstand. I recommend it frequently.

Simon Burtonshaw-Gunn joined Risktec Solutions Limited, a specialist risk management consultancy predominantly involved in the high risk and externally-regulated industries, in September 2007 as a Principal Management Consultant. He has an MA in Strategic HRM, an MSc in Business Management and a PhD covering partnering and collaborative working. Visiting Professor at the University of Salford since 2005, Professor Burtonshaw-Gunn has presented conference papers internationally and is widely published. To complement his academic achievements his experience is recognised with Fellowship of four professional institutions including the UK's Chartered Management Institute and the Institute of Business Consulting.
